the party is in full swing when they finally arrive. draped in colorful, long robes, diplomats glide through the enterprise’s ready room in various states of tipsiness. if she’d tried to get here on time, she was sure this trickery of hers wouldn’t have worked, he’d seen right through it. but this unfashionably late arrival, the captain’s toast completed more than half an hour ago, christine is sure he didn’t see coming.

pressing ahead, she locks their arms together, tugging him ahead one final step. the automatic doors close behind them with a resolute swoosh. doctor mccoy can still escape — if he wants, but not without attracting the eyes of everyone in the room, or without risking being the butt of every joke on the ship for a week straight. it was, perhaps, slightly cruel to force him here; the twinge of guilt inside her chest, concealed by twinkling eyes, certainly seems to agree with her, but christine is sure she is in the right here.

it will just take a little convincing to get him to agree with her.

presumptions are often funny, how too many seem so willing to accept what they’d decided long before meeting the people before them. he’s so very far from dumb: a brilliance that doesn’t need to only be book smart ( though she has no doubt he is much more adept than @entrpz admits ). playing dumb has never been a move she can pull… not when her entire worth has always been precariously balanced upon her smarts.

he plays dumb, she plays cold. colder than emotional heart will ever truly be, colder than she knows how to keep herself. ❝ you shouldn’t quit the day job, you’re not quite that much of an actor. ❞ it could easily be missed, the teasing that comes half hidden in words, humming beneath her breath. ❝ you shouldn’t worry. you confuse me plenty without me needing to mistakenly misjudge your intelligence. ❞

"You don't need anything that you can make noise with besides your voice and sometimes you don't even need that." He chuckles with a cocked eyebrow "How about we get you a fidget spinner instead? i think their less annoying than clicky pens. They make a lot of noise to though so maybe that's not such a good idea either." Leonard looks around his office then "You ever thought that following your exercise schedule might just calm you down enough that you don't fidget so much?"

She can breathe through the pain just fine. That's what she tells herself when the doctor hovers over her, only further aggravating her temper. It takes half a mind not to push him, but eventually he sits up. Echo grits her teeth and sits up on her own, nostrils flared.

Damn. That does hurt.

"It's been worse," she hisses, forcing herself to slide to her knees. "I'll manage. We have to confirm that's the last of the ambush before we do anything else." It's ridiculous to be this difficult, but she doesn't need his judgment. His discovery of her truths. "McCoy. Focus."

At least Echo isn't the only one. Although many would consider her standoffish, the tactical officer can't help but curl the corner of her lip at Uhura's assessment of several colleagues. Her eyes observe those in question in the midst of their shore leave, taking a small sip of her drink absently.

"I don't think anyone is meant to understand those four. From what I've seen, Smith and Jones are invested in their work, but..." She trails off, clipping the amusement in her tone before it can bubble through. "Spock, I believe, can be cracked -- as you say, if given ample amount of time and patience. The Captain, however, is an anomaly no equation will ever solve."

what a time to finally get some sleep, or anything that could avoid how things only ever seem to get messier the more exhausted people leave her. section 31 was hardly known for good choices - for ever taking the wellbeing of… anyone, really, into consideration. there were goals && there were results. nothing else mattered and nothing else would ever be focussed upon. if they wanted something, getting it was just a matter of strategy.

life. exhausting. typical. a hundred words flood to mind, an ocean of misfortune, all painted with an air of tired understanding. things find ways to go wrong, it’s a simple law of the universe, where the odds are always stacked against them. yet positive outlook has always been a choice: never borne from any kind of ignorance or naivety. science officer has seen the way things play out - time and time again - she’s seen the damage that comes when the impossible finds a way around their necks.

❝ ill-starred? or maybe just an average thursday. ❞ little curve of lips reads like an apology, knowing it’s not quite the answer @entrpz seeks. light && careful approach is not one of not taking him seriously, yet it’s also her attempt to not slip down same frustrated path. ❝ dare I ask what happened? or should I assume it’s quite terrible and just sagely nod and utter niceties? I’ve been practicing. ❞

hand trembles for an instant. a flutter of nerves seeps through her frame as a litany of questions swirl inside her head. a clear, correct decision is out of reach. there is no time to look for a pattern, allow science to guide her decision; which would be fine, even if not ideal, if her gut had anything to say.

her reliance on her ‘id’, the unconscious, primitive side of her personality, is an uncommonly large factor in her decision-making for someone who spent most of her adult life entrenched in studies, in creating guidelines for treatment and research. but she’s learned to trust it. to go with what her mind is saying, when her eyes fail to understand.

but she can’t now. there is nothing there, silence greets her when she tries to regret into her mind.
