❝ oh c'mon, chris, i'm not that bad. ❞ it's a strange feeling to be the one sat in the chair, when georgie is so used to being the one taking care of everybody else, and even more used to wearing the same disbelief on her face that she knows is on christine's, even without looking at her. georgie isn't sure she likes it. because yeah, she knows. she knows that: ❝ okay, okay, i am. curse of the medic, in't it? ❞

not much else she can do but own up to it.

with a look of pure gratitude, georgie takes the offered clothes and disappears into the bathroom, tossing out her fit-for-the-incinerator outfit. scrubs have never looked so good. she wets her hair in the sink and is still brushing it through as she re-emerges. ❝ you are an angel among men. don't suppose you're free? i owe you—well, at least dinner, but coffee'd be a good start if you're still on shift. ❞

❛ once or twice. i try not to let it get to my head. ❜ tying off the bag with a knot, christine shoves it in her locket before it can get mixed up with waste; it didn't look salvageable, but a bit of elbow grease and vinegar never let her down. ❛ got three more hours and i'm dead on my feet, please, i need coffee. ❜

how did they ever used to go nights without sleep during deployment is something she can barely comprehend. it used to be easy. but stateside, the hours drag and her body practically begs for caffeine. ❛ but i'm holding you to the promise of dinner. i think i still owe you a drink. ❜

Mel looks down at the fish in Christine's hands.

"Is it a goldfish?" It's orange, so it must be. She's making several assumptions to get there, but it's shiny and bright and Mel figures a carnival would want something recognizable and cartoonish. Everyone knows what a goldfish is.

"I think they need twenty gallons. Less, I think, if it's a beta." There's a chance she's wrong, but Mel doesn't mind. It's an easily researchable question and it's relief to know that she can be wrong about this, where the consequences aren't so dire.

"If you, um, if you don't want it, I don't mind taking it."

❛ twenty gallons? ❜ christine lifts the fish closer to eye-level, examining it more closely. ❛ you are a lot of work for such a little guy, aren't you? ❜ the fish paid her no mind, tail flicking as it swam away from her peering eyes.

it wasn't that she couldn't take care of it. in fact, she could sort of picture exactly where she would put it in her apartment, but, well, she wasn't a fish person. dogs, cats, hell, she had a pet chicken growing up, but fish? what did they even do?

he was cute, though.

❛⠀ that is a strange way of asking for help. ⠀❜ christine sat perched on the edge of the sickbay bed, legs swinging idly as she finished up writing some charts. setting the padd down at her side, she looked up, studying him with a crooked grin.

❛⠀ should i be worried about what else is in my file? 'cause i have no clue how dancing made the cut, unless someone down in quarters has an interesting interpretation of the term footwork. ⠀❜

perhaps not. christine did have a funny feeling he heard her the first time. call it intuition, call it the frown she saw form between his brows. but as he only turned to face her the third time, the second and third time were absolutely necessary.

the fourth time was just for her.

call that payback.

❛⠀ i think you've seen me at my most human.⠀❜ there is something snide, almost angry, to her tone. gone is her usual warmth, the fragile silent truce they've tiptoed around since they woke up naked after the first night. spite simmers just beneath her skin, red blotching in her cheeks; she's never been the sort to regret a good night spent under the sheets, she enjoys sex, that is nothing to be ashamed of, but if she had any idea how awkward he would become, how weird, she'd have kicked him out of bed that first night.

❛⠀ you can't even look me in the eye! i'm sorry if i decided to focus on being useful and solving this mess, i'll attend to your ego when i'm done!⠀❜

making her excuses to erica and la'an under her breath, christine shoves half the room aside to reach jo, eyes wide as she takes in the tableau. jo, on one side, and dickless, on the other. neither looking pleased. in fact, if she had some credits on hand, she might have passed some to the bartender for a bet; she can almost hear the clatter and shouts of a fight starting.

and she is not going to spend the rest of her night on sickbay.

❛⠀ okay, how about this? ⠀❜ christine moves as if to go speak, but then breaks into a sprint, practically scooping jo into her arms as she hauls them out of the bar.
