Northside’s Buddhist Dharma Center hosts January’s Cincinnati’s Table
Cincinnati’s Northside community braved several inches of snow and below freezing temperatures to enjoy conversation and partake of Anu Tamrakar’s Nepalese delicacies Sunday evening. Kevin Celarek of the Buddhist Dharma Center hosted the third of our year-long dinner series. Artist and Professor at The Art Academy of Cincinnati, Loraine Wible, created an abstract interactive video installation focused around January’s theme: Envision the Future.
The Buddhist Dharma center is a place of calmness and quiet meditation. It is a place of inclusion, the same value of inclusiveness that Cincinnati’s Table was created for. The center was a perfect site for this community gathering. There’s always a jolt of energy surrounding the New Year as we both reflect on the past and look ahead to the fresh start that a new calendar year brings. While the location brought a feeling of tranquility to the night, there was also a noticeable bit of bustling joy and cheer in the air, that sort of cheeriness that’s brought on by good company and breaking bread.

Anu Tamrakar and Jeffrey Miller provided a delightful display of Nepalese fare for the evening. Among the appetizers: momos (a South Asian dumpling), pumpkin soup, chatapata (a popular snack in Nepal), and bara (picture a lentil pancake). Check out the photos and descriptions below. As has been the case with every Cincinnati’s Table dinner so far, folks went back for seconds, thirds, maybe even fourths. Chef Jeffrey Miller has paired up with each of the guest chefs, and was on point again, as always.

Anu’s husband pitched in to make the Halwa dessert.
Anu spoke about the process of preparing and making the meal with Jeffrey, and she and her daughter said a prayer to bless the dinner before guests descended upon the buffet. It was so evident how much love and joy she put into the meal. Her graciousness and care and her passion for the beauty of life showed through her voice and her smile. She exuded sincerity. Each step of the meal, from the grocery list prep to the shopping to the chopping to the frying, was met with thought and care. She passed out a small illustration of the body with the 7 innate soul qualities to each guest, to think about as each goes on their daily lives.

Kevin led us in prayer as well:
May you be filled with loving kindness. May you be grateful and satisfied with your life. May you be healthy and full of energy. May you be at peace with yourself and at ease with others. May you be happy and may you find happiness in loving one another. This I ask in the name of Jesus and all the great saints…Amen.
Inevitably when we think about the New Year, we think about time. Loraine Wible talks about time and her process for the video installation she created for the event:
Loraine Wible, artist and Art Academy of Cincinnati professor
“What is time for? This question seems to be absurd because we think of time as something we are subjected to, not a concept with a purpose. In the end though time is an idea, it's something we think to make sense of our experiences. But like most concepts it's not clear, it contains paradoxes, the more we think of it the more it confuses us. In Pataphysics (the science of imaginary solutions) the more confused you get the more likely you are of getting closer to Truth. For this installation I created an immersive abstract environment where many confusing questions float around gently. The visuals are bright and joyful with smooth surfaces reminding the viewer of a childish world encouraging them to approach these loaded questions playfully”.
Those who lead and assist with the Cincinnati’s Table project will continue on this worthy endeavor bridging relationships within our neighborhoods throughout 2019. Bringing our neighbors who’ve come from faraway lands together with our long-time residents and making meaningful connections over a meal is just one way of creating a stronger community. Food is the ultimate universal language, after all.
Happy New Year!
