If it were anyone else giving her the spiel, their head would have been lobbed clean on a spike. It isn’t any wonder Sam’s goaded the American wonder boy to stand beside her as she curls into the visitor’s chair. Out for a week; it’s a miracle Echo hasn’t gotten sick from the lack of sleep or food. Steve is worried and she gets it but it doesn’t amount to a hill of beans when compared to how much she’s worried for her friend. Over and over the scene plays like a broken record, a half-baked visual of Ellie dawning the gauntlet before the world turns to white. It’s a spectacular send-off, one last fuck you to the person responsible for so much pain.

But for the first time in her life, she wants to be selfish. Ellie doesn’t get to make the sacrifice play if she’s not riding off a cliff hand-in-hand alongside her. “She’ll wake up.” It isn’t a question to the blonde who gently places a hand on her shoulder. Echo abruptly shrugs it away. “I said she’ll wake up. So when she does I’ll be there, Rogers.”

DROPPING THE FINISHED MAGAZINE to the floor with little care, the smaller woman stares up at her friend with a hazy confusion. “What?” Popping her gum, the woman scoots her foot across the carpet to poke at the Guns & Ammo pages scattered and bent. “I didn’t really throw it at you, I just kinda... you were in the way. Of the trashcan.” Behind the couch, in which she resided on.

ELLIE ALWAYS LOOKS SO MUCH bigger than her from a vertical standpoint, but the height complex feels even worse when she’s sat on the dirtied pavement outside of ----- oh, they’ve moved. Since when did they move? The smaller woman squints up at her friend, hands fidgeting and threatening to pick the skin around her nails apart from the anxiety built up in her gut. The city has proven to be her kryptonite; once unbothered by much, hailed for the glory of war, she feels all but useless in the neon lights of the future and what a panic attack could entail out here in the public, in the dark, when no one but her watches. She prefers the anonymity, but it often comes with a price.

“First of all ---- name callin’ is six types of rude. Second of all, what happened is more embarrassing than it needs to be, so your throwing me over your damn shoulder like a goddamn football quarterback’s gonna make it worse.” She plucks a particularly tender spot on her ring finger and winces, dropping her gaze to her hands. “I can walk home, El. Just need you to guide me with this learning curve, that’s all.”
