The temperatures that had been dipping below zero for the last week had finally crept close to thawing and she wondered, as she crunched her way through the slushy snow why the park was so empty. Ever since she’d entered near 95th she hadn’t seen a soul, quick scurries of winter snow covered squirrels foraging through the frosty crystals. Not a person in sight as far as the eye could see. It was eerie, the silence. The calm. The loneliness.

After 2 years without him she’d assumed she’d be used to it. Tightening her scarf, securing her beanie against the glacial Manhattan wind she wondered if she’d walk this city alone forever.

They’d walked these streets, possessed them, figuring no power on earth could break them. She should have known they’d break themselves. Torn and tattered, abandoned. She was supposed to be used to abandonment.

Another half mile, the pervasive hush becoming anxiety inducing and she huffed, a strangled laugh. Only she could find herself alone in New York City, but, she thought, of course. She stuffed her hands deep in her pockets, ignoring the fractals of tears on her cheek. Everybody leaves, after all.
