How to Combat Distraction in the Workplace

As it emerged this week from a recent survey conducted across the UK, distraction is nominated as one of the most stressful and emerging problems in the workplace.  The attention spam of people has drastically decreased due to our evolving relation with social media, instant access to different data online, making the stillness of the working desk an unfavourable factor for our focus at work.

In addition to that the concept of the office desk is steadily changing.  Do we really need desks when everything is becoming mobile?

  Dublin- based design students Stephen Quinn and Pat D’Arcy have taken into consideration the evolving nature of how and where we work and have come up with futuristic office design that is set to combat the constant distraction experienced in the office space.

Their design follows the concepts of flexibility, movement and open plan space combined with high-end technology, which would not only optimise your work, but take a lot of the mental input and output, allowing the mind to focus on more creative and productive tasks. 

  Following extensive research, the design duo has come to the conclusion that in the perfect office of the future people will move from place to place for the different tasks they need to execute.  You will have one desk for strategy planning, another for barnstorming and inspiration, and then you can move on to another one to send a few emails. 

In his own words, Stephen Quinn states: “ The ideas is that you could walk up and your body of work appear at each station.  The perfect office of the future should cater for different working needs throughout the working day."

For meeting and collaboration sessions, desks will pivot from being horizontal to the wall so it can be used as a white board. 

As the design duo believes that occasional chats amongst colleagues nurture people’s ability to work, all the workstations face outward to encourage the serendipity of casual conversation. 

  Redesigning the office space is a key factor into prompting a more inspiring and productive office environment.  And maybe we do not need to wait until 2030 to make the necessary changes to boost the productivity of our employees.
