Where does Alfred want to own a resort? Why do Luke join the military? Who calls Max 'Murmur' and why does somebody immortal care about enforcing laws that are so changeable and will last but a fraction of his lifetime? What's Eoin's favourite drink to make and what did Isaac want to do with his life - middle aged and gas station attendant surely wasn't his dream?
Alfred, or Alfie as he prefers, only Lilly gets away with calling him Alfred, wants to own a resort, simply because his father does. It sounds shallow and rather simple, but it's true. His grandfather was able to make a living out of a bed and breakfast, and his father expanded on the idea, eventually going into the resort business. Alfie grew up watching his dad become successful, and he grew up surrounded by the wealth of his dad's hard work. And being able to give people comfort and happiness was just a plus. Alfie would love to be able to be as successful as his father, in order to provide for himself and for his future family, that he hopes to have. He also wants to keep his father's business reputable and productive. It is his name that's on the business.
Luke. Gosh, that poor kid. He was in love with his sister's best friend, who was with a boy who hurt her. It drove Luke crazy, and yet he could never get his mind off her. Eventually Luke couldn't take it anymore, and after the death of his father, he went to the extremes to get out of his town, feeling stuck and suffocated by all the drama. He enlisted in the Air Force, wanting to become a pilot, to be free of it all. He was in a much better state of mind, glad to have a new sense of purpose in life that wasn't a girl who let herself get into harmful situation after harmful situation. He made friends, people he could count on to save his life, and was eventually shipped overseas. That, though is a whole other story.
Only the other demons call Max by his real name. Them and the Angels. They're the only ones who can see through Max's mortal disguise. He finds entertainment in the police work, really. With his skill at making people forget, he has been able to have plenty of fun in the city where corruption is always whispered about, and the criminals are often the most innocent of souls. He's also preparing for the war, that he believes is to occur, and being right in the midst of it, in a position of mortal power, is going to help him to survive.
Eoin likes the flaming drinks, even though they're a pain in the ass to make. He likes the way they impress the crowd, even though it's nothing more than science. He also likes to serve simple drinks, being a bit lazy. He hates when someone orders a dozen tricky things all together, thinking themselves clever, or when a group of young kids order a dozen shots in a row. He knows that it's just going to end badly for the kids, and he's gonna have to clean up the mess.
Isaac had wanted to be retired at this point in his life. Before he found himself running for his life, he had thought that he would be living easy, taken care of by younger members of the gang, helping to negotiate the trickier deals and plans, maybe even starting to settle down with a girl. It wasn't unusual for gang members to have families. Not when they all took care of each other, looking out for each others kids. He never wanted to be on the run from them, working part-time, unable to hold any decent jobs with his lack of professional experience.
