I am in BIOL major too. I have headache in choosing upper level courses other than those required. Have you taken or heard about any upper level courses (either arts or science) that are without prerequisites? Or do you have recommendations? I am using student loan and try to minimize the tuition. Thanks a lot!

It’ll be hard to minimize tuition just because you need 120 credits to graduate and each credit costs about $160 as a Science student.

Biol 343, Plants and Peoples, doesn’t have any pre-reqs except for Biol 121, which most Science students have anyway. I really enjoyed it because I love studying plants, but it’s also a great introductory course to botany if you’re curious about that area. 

That’s pretty much the only upper level Science course I know that doesn’t have any pre-reqs aside from 100-level Sciences, and some of the EOSC courses like EOSC 326 and EOSC 340. 

There are plenty of upper level Arts courses that don’t have pre-reqs, it’ll be hard to list them all, but you should just dig around on the Courses site in the areas that you’re interested in and find some!

hello, i was wondering if the ubc custom edition textbooks are significantly different from the non-custom edition?

Nope, they usually contain less chapters than the original textbooks that they came from. Profs who realize that they don’t use a large chunk of the textbook will ask the publishers to pull out the chapters that they do use and put them into a “UBC Custom Edition” textbook. 

Before you go on to buy a non-custom textbook, for a class that requires a “custom” textbook, you should double-check that the custom textbook contains only chapters from one textbook. Sometimes profs will create custom editions by putting together chapters from two different books (ie Distance-Ed version of EOSC 326). 

Maybe make a post in a Facebook group to see if any students who have taken that course can help you out or email the professor. 

Examples of courses that use “custom” textbooks with chapters from only one textbook: Phys 101, Biol 260.
