how did you fail the phys midterm but ended up with B+ at the end? I just checked my mark.. and i failed my midterm (even though they scaled it) I do all the questions but I'm still struggling idk why. How did u study?

It helped to due a ton of past midterm and final questions, because it gave me a really good idea on the type of questions they like to ask and what I needed to focus on. If you ask the UBC Physics Society, they could probably hook you up with some exam packages; I bought the final exam package from them and did as many of the practice exams that I had time to do.

I heard that Physics 101 may be deferred to second year but do you think it's better to get it over with in the first year? Will I have a problem fitting it into my timetable second year? Or is it a good idea to take it during the summer term after first year?

You can take it later only if it’s not a pre-req for the program you’re interested in or if you don’t need to take it at all, if you’re hoping to major in something like Physics or Astronomy, you’ll need to take it in first year:

I ended up doing it in second year and it was fine, but second years register last, so you’ll likely be on a waitlist for a little bit before being moved into the class. You can always take it in the summer if you want to get it over with, a lot of my friends did that.

for someone who really doesn't like physics and isn't amazing at physics 12, how difficult would PHYS 101 be to handle? I really hate the idea of having to take physics in university, but 101 is needed for so many majors :(

It’s not too bad if you practice a lot, I ended up liking PHYS 101 more than physics 12 though.

Do you know if we will still need to take PHYS 101 if we are planning on doing an integrated sciences major?

It depends on what you want to integrate and whether you will meet all the lower-level requirements without PHYS 101.

Are we allowed to defer PHYS 101 to our second year summer or even third year term 1?

Technically you could, I have a friend who took PHYS 101 the summer after second year, but she’s doing an extra year with no co-op or exchange, so I’m not sure if PHYS 101 is the reason she’s delaying graduation. 

You just have to finish all your lower-level requirements before being promoted to fourth year:

I would just get it over with ASAP though since I’m assuming you’re not a Physics major, and having to do that one lower-level course while you’re trying to focus on your upper-levels would be kind of annoying.

Would you recommend that I take PHYS 101 in the summer or during my second year winter session? I ask this because there is a 3 hour lab associated with it and I'm not sure if that will make it worse for my second year courses? By the way: I'm only taking this course just to meet the requirements for a Biology major, have no interest in physics whatsoever.. Thanks!

If you’re not taking any other courses in the summer, taking PHYS 101 then would be best just to get it over with.

Do you still have the phys 101 and chem 123 problem sets? I would love to take a look at them :D

I do, but you’ll have to email me for the CHEM 123 problem sets. The PHYS 101 solution manual is much too large to send over email though.

Do I need to understand/ remember anything from PHYS 100/ Physics 12 for PHYS 101? I'm planning on taking Physics 12 in the summer but don't think I will learn much...

There’s always a mini review section so it should be fine! I actually took Physics 12 in summer school after my Grade 12 year and didn’t take Phys 101 until my second year at UBC and still managed a B+ while the class average was a C! =P
