Shameless US 4X05: There's The Rub

Showtime’s Shameless There’s The Rub TV Show Review.

Shameless: Season 4, Episode 5: There’s The Rub held four pivotal plot revelations and twists, easily making it the most important episode of the season. Fiona Gallagher (Emmy Rossum) has always been the rock of the family, the responsible one. Watching her willingly and repeatedly fire bomb her entire personal life was something new. Only after the obliteration was complete and she was living in the wreckage did she realize what she had done and the type of relationship she had just thrown away. Her sorrow was sincere but it was too little and far too late.

Fiona’s second instance of malfeasance will have major reverberations, not only for herself and her family but for her employment as well. Fiona’s guardianship of her family was based on her being a fit parent. The ending to ‘There’s The Rub’ throws that completely out of the widow, especially when they drug test her and the result comes back positive. Fiona told-on herself, incriminating herself to medical third parties. Those declarations will come back to roost in court.

When her boss, Mike Pratt (Jake McDorman), finds out about her child endangerment and drug arrest, he and the company he works for might feel compelled to fire Fiona. Since Pratt has a brother that is an addict and since they were his brother’s drugs, Pratt might feel sympathy but then again, its not his company, its his fathers. He has a name and a family income to protect.

Ian Gallagher (Cameron Monaghan) was the enigma of the season until this episode. His enigmatic return was another instance of a Gallagher throwing away something they had worked hard for up till that point. All that ROTC training, all of that prep for the military, and Ian throws it all away for an undisclosed reason (beyond what the MPs said).

The Indian themes in the episode were ridiculous and humorous as they were intended to be. Frank Gallagher’s ill-thoughtout machinations bore the same fruit 99% of his other schemes had once again.

At the end of ‘There’s The Rub’, the viewer does not know if Fiona was crying for herself and her predicament or for Lip Gallagher (Jeremy Allen White). If she goes to jail, the only Gallagher that can take charge of the household is Lip. That would mean that he has to drop out of college. He couldn’t possibly do work-study, attend class, do homework, and travel between their home and school. He’s struggling with college life as it is.

Fiona’s tears may have been for a dream the Gallagher family had fostered for years that was now dead by her actions: Lip making something of himself.
