I might be off but I feel like Sam's perspective on wanting the hunting life might have flipped because before he only had Dean so he accepted it was his life and he wanted to hunt with his brother. But now Mary has presented a different way, which means he will have her (and since he thought he could get Dean on board) and can live the life he's really always wanted which was a non hunting life. The difference lies in his having Mary now (and thinking he could get Dean on board).

That’s a very good point :) Her presence is definitely shaking a lot of things up that might have seemed set in stone before.

I just felt like the tragedy of Mary saying she’s working with the BMOL  for Sam and Dean, so they could have “normal” lives, is disregarding how they want to spend their lives, especially since they both told her what hunting means to them. Of course it could be argued that they both wouldn’t need to “make the world a better place” via hunting, as Dean said in 12x01, if there were no more monsters, but I think that’s not really the point.

On the other hand, you are right that Sam’s choice of siding with Mary and the BMOL might be an indicator of him wanting his life to be different after all now that he thinks the opportunity is there with his mother back and this organization that seems capable of wiping the slate clean so to say (from his perspective, I don’t think the BMOL’s extermination plan is justifiable at all, just to be clear). Especially since he, like you rightly said, believes he can get Dean to join as well. Having Dean, his mother, and the satisfaction of knowing he helped rid the world of monsters for good and no longer having to spend his time hunting them? Big temptation right there, and like you said not possible before Mary (and the BMOL) were there.

I think I could’ve worded myself better in that I believe getting out of the hunting life is in my opinion less of a reason for Sam to side with the BMOL than the (dangerous) belief that their plans will save more people. But heck, maybe Sam will state his reasons in a couple episodes and prove me completely wrong xD

In any case, I really hope I could answer your ask to your satisfaction. I’m not really good with writing meta, and it probably shows, but I tried my best. Also, thank you for this ask, because it made me rethink on my previous thoughts :)

So, in all that, with the MoL's obsession with ridding the Americas of all supernatural..... has Mary told them about the nephillim? Do they know Lucifer's spawn is incoming at a nine-month-trajectory? Because I'd think they'd find that of interest, even if they're not particularly worried yet. Where was that conversation, and how did it go? (Or was I refilling the decanter when it happened?)
