Type experiment

For these type experiments I wanted to explore the concept of freedom. When mind mapping associating words with Soar, I realised that soar mainly reminds me of something that is free in the air. As this contrasts with control I thought this would be interesting to explore

I decided I wanted to experiment with using a free hand script type because my hand moves freely across the page. To blend it with control I decided to place it in boxes. I was inspired to create this experiment when remembering handwriting prompts I had to use when I was a child. I like how this experiment shows the two words blended together. However, I think using a different word than soar might be more successful as this word felt constricting.

When drawing each letter in the boxes I realised that the joining of the letters created their own boxes. To explore this I individually drew each character then joined up each edge of the letter. I like how this created shapes within the word itself. However, I do not think this experiment was successful in showing how the words blended together because it does not feel like the writing is free or being controlled fully.

Following the last experiment I decided to experiment with making the word connect to emphasise its freedom and soaring across the page. To add the element of control I decided to use the same method as the second. I think this experiment was more successful than the second because the type feels free. However, I feel like the control element is a secondary part. This stops the two topics feeling blended.

For this experiment I decided to look at blending two typefaces to convey my concept. Like my other experiments I decided to hand write the word soar to emphasise the freedom of the word. However for the word control I decided to use a more formal type. By overlapping the two words my aim was to show how the words could blend even if they contradicted each other. I like how this experiment was different to my other experiments because it required the audience to take a step back to understand it. This requires them to question why the type has been over layed and look for the meaning behind it.
