"Having dreamt away the morning and puttered away the afternoon, it is time to do the one important thing left for me to do, which is not to wallow in the memory of the dead (who can disappoint you every bit as much as the living), but to go fishing."
E. Donnall Thomas, Jr., from "Ephemerella," In Hemingway's Meadow: Award-Winning Fly-Fishing Stories, ed. Joe Healy (Fly rod and Reel Books, 2009)
"I cannot take my eyes away from the fish and its many colors. There are yellows and blacks and ambers lying there in the net with the creek water washing over them. There is even a bit of red on the sides; rich, perfect crimson, the color of a bleeding wound. I wet my hand and run my fingertips along the trout's sleek flanks, amazed at their absolute vitality.
Finally, I detach the tiny fly from the fish and peel the net away around it. The trout rights itself slowly, flicks its tail and disappears. I suppose that I could claim some elaborate form of moral credit for the beneficence of the release, but the decision has nothing to do with regard for life or ecological correctness or any of that.
I just don't have room in my life for a dead fish right now."
