The air here was fragrant, not at all like Sanguinem which was always heavy with the smell of blood, a mix of earth and metals without so much as a breeze to lighten its oppressing atmosphere. Neither was it like the surface that had fallen to ruin, where everything was broken, water had turned to acid and every life seemed to struggle to survive. Here flowers seemed to flourish, the air itself almost felt alive and Mika couldn’t help but stare at the meadow in which he stood. Was it possible for a place like this to even exist in this twisted world?
He’d no recollection of how he’d gotten here, only knew that it couldn’t possibly be anywhere near Shinjuku. Had something happened to the transport? But there was no sign of any wreckage anywhere. Regardless he had to find a way back; he had to go find Yu. Once he did, once they finally escaped together... maybe they could come here.
“What is this place?” Mika wondered aloud, staring up at a tree into which three names had been carved, none of them the least bit familiar. Could a place really exist... that was this peaceful?
“Where am I?”
“You’ve been studying for quite awhile now,“ Richard commented, briefly looking up from the book he had been reading for his latest assignment in English. “Are you having difficulty with any of the questions?”
"That's what you and I do, protect each other.”
It’s enough to make him pause in his paperwork, the young Lord glancing up from the piles to gaze upon her face, and wonder how it was that such a young girl could have made up his entire world. Was this what being a Father felt like? Someone who was so precious to him it felt as if she left the room with his beating heart. The words are nothing she hasn’t said before, but in the way she says it, it’s special. It isn’t their stubbornness in the way, the argument they’ve had up until recently of always protecting each other but not themselves. It was..a better solution.
What was Asbel without Sophie? Nobody. He’d been down that road before, of having to live without his best friend and his daughter. He just couldn’t do it again — the scars proved that. So to hear of a fight where it would be the two of them constantly watching one another..it was a relief.
Something shifted in his shoulders enough for them to sag slightly, offering her a smile he held only for her, near radiant in it’s affection and achingly gentle with the weight of how deeply, how completely he treasured his child.
( Was that a Father’s love? If so it felt more painful and whole than so many things in his life that had fallen in pieces. But Sophie..Sophie had always crawled into his heart and made it something better, something new. )
"…You’re right, Sophie. That’s what we do. We always protect each other. You’re always beside me, keeping me safe — just like I want more than anything to always keep you safe. For now, I think the fighting is over — though.."
He moved to place his hand over her head, moving it to her cheek. He’d seen Cheria do it dozens of times..maybe it wasn’t so weird if he did too?
"…Stay right next to me, okay? Because if you do…" His eyes crinkled.
“I know I can be strong.”
