Galette des Rois is a traditional French tart that is often eaten at Epiphany celebrations. This version has a rich almond filling inside buttery puff pastry, and there is a figurine or charm hidden inside. Christmas is a great time to share this tasty treat with family and friends.
Ingredients: 2 sheets of store-bought puff pastry. 1 cup almond flour. 1/2 cup granulated sugar. 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened. 2 eggs. 1 tsp almond extract. 1 tbsp milk. 1 hidden charm or figurine traditionally a fve.
Instructions: Preheat the oven to 375F 190C. In a mixing bowl, combine almond flour, granulated sugar, softened butter, 1 egg, and almond extract. Mix until smooth. Place one sheet of puff pastry on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Spread the almond mixture evenly over the puff pastry, leaving a small border around the edges. Press the hidden charm or figurine into the almond mixture. In a small bowl, beat the remaining egg with 1 tablespoon of milk to make an egg wash. Brush the edges of the puff pastry with the egg wash. Place the second sheet of puff pastry over the almond mixture and press the edges to seal. Brush the top of the tart with the remaining egg wash. Using a sharp knife, make a few small slits in the top of the tart to allow steam to escape. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the tart is golden brown and puffed up. Allow the tart to cool slightly before serving.
