Despite Pran telling him to get lost, we have Pat arriving at Pran’s table in the library. Pran is wrestling with how the architects and engineers who destroyed the bus shelter will pay for its replacement; Pat is concerned too, but his attention seems to be focused elsewhere—on Pran:

Pran threatens to get up and … so Pat backs away hastily, while making shushing motions

… but he soon returns, offers some unrequested aid, then watches fondly as Pran ponders the next steps in his unwelcome task.
