The last couple of lists are short, but wow there are a lot coming up in the next couple of seasons. Also there are a lot of episodes that I thought there might be some reference in there but I couldn’t find it.

The episode “Election Day” is full of really cool historical figures (more on that in a future post!), but even though Clara Brett Martin, played by Patricia Fagan, has appeared in other episodes, this one gave her a real shining moment in helping the suffragette movement in that fateful election. 

Martin was born on January 25, 1874 to an Anglican-Irish family, their wealth helping fund her pursuit of a career in law. 

In 1888, Martin was accepted to Toronto’s Trinity College, where she graduated at the age of just sixteen with a Bachelor in Mathematics, something that was unheard of at the time. 

A few years later in 1891, Martin would submit a petition to the Law Society of Upper Canada to allow her to commence her career as a lawyer, but it was rejected. Thankfully, W.D. Balfour would sponsor a bill that would allow the word “person” in the Law Society’s statute to be interpreted that women should be allowed as well as men. Premier Oliver Mowat would pass this legislation a year later, finally allowing Martin’s admission. 

Martin graduated in 1897 and would begin to practice as a lawyer, the first woman in the British Empire to do so. 

In the 20th century, Martin would go on to run for Toronto City Council, but was defeated in the 1920 municipal election. She passed away in 1923.

Interesting fact

- In the episode, we see Martin represent Margaret Haile, who was also a real person. Amazingly, this also happened in real life as well, as Martin was a supporter of Haile’s work.

Season 8 of Murdoch Mysteries is one of my favourite seasons, especially because of the suffragette arc given to Dr. Ogden and Dr. Grace. I was also delighted to learn that the lady in their group, Margaret Haile, was a real person. Played by Nicole Underhay, she has appeared in “On the Waterfront Part 1 and 2″, “The Murdoch Appreciation Society”, “High Voltage”, “Murdoch and the Temple of Death”, “Crabtree Mania”, and of course “Election Day”.

While doing my research, I’m a little frustrated with the lack of information as to Haile’s birth, death, and general life outside of politics, so if you have links, please send them to me and I’ll update this post (and provide credit). The internet has confirmed she was born in Canada, at least.

A schoolteacher and journalist by profession, Haile was also greatly influenced by the political ideology known as socialism, spending much of her time arguing in her articles why women deserved a better quality of life and the right for women to be in politics. While she spent most of her time in New England, she returned to Canada in 1902, matching up with the Murdoch Mysteries episode. She was nominated in the 1902 provincial election in Toronto for the Canadian Socialist League, and while she did not win, she garnered 79 votes, which was astounding at the time, given that women were not allowed to vote until 1917. In the entire British empire, she might have been the first woman to ever run for a major elected office.

Yep, she definitely is a badass worth remembering.
