Not One For Theatrics

Mob Psycho 100: Season 2 Episode 1: “Ripped Apart, Someone is Waiting”     An Episodic Review by WillDeezer

    The long-awaited Mob Psycho returns for it the second season in glorious explosive colors. Mob Psycho wastes no time returning to the action. The first half of the episode is spent showing the dynamic between Reigen and Mob hasn’t changed much. Mob still exorcists spirits for Reigen. It would seem that Mob realizes Reigen isn’t as strong as he once imagined. Another change is that Reigen is paying Mob for his services.     The second part of the episode focuses on a committee called the Psycho Helmet Club. The committee believes that Mob is their founder and destined leader. However, they don’t believe he’s grown enough as an individual to lead them. This causes one of the members; Emi, to go on a journey to help Mob grow. The plan ends up dwindling as the episode goes on, showing that Mob might be more mature than he lets on.      The animation to this episode was bright, pretty and over the top. Remaining the viewer why the first season was so good. The action portion of the show was fluid, showing us that Bones is a fantastic studio, however, the plot part of the story was kind of weak. I don’t remember anything in the first one and it was hard to jump right back in.     It felt weird to have Mob take a backseat in this episode since it was his big return. To focus on the member of Psycho Helmet member, Emi was a bit shocking. I barely remember her or the committee during the first part. All in all, the episode was good. I wish we would've got more action and more Mob, but more of the series is better than none.

Studio vs Source Material

Tokyo Ghoul: re Season Two Episode 5: “Confluence, Confusion” An Episodic Impression by WillDeezer

Well, this episode wasn’t so confusing narratively. The fight between Aogiri Tree and CCG has come to an end. Both organizations are in dire condition, but they continue to take potshots at each other in the background of the episode. Kaneki, however, has called for several defective members of both teams. He informs them that he’s going to start his own organization called GOAT, focusing on getting humans and ghouls to coexist. Most of the rogue members decide to join him. Meanwhile, Akira is able to recover from her wounds with the help of a doctor. Amon talks to her after she wakes up, conversing that he regrets hiding from her. Touka visits her next and admits to killing her father because he killed Hinami’s parents. She forces Akira to visit Hinami and some kids causing Akira to realize that she doesn’t hate ghouls anymore. This episode has a bunch of moving pieces in it. We’re given the end of two-character arcs and the beginning of a new arc in one episode. Naki's revenge plot on Kaneki comes to an end. Naki tells Kaneki he will join him if he can beat him. Kaneki does easily, but I wish the fight would’ve been taken more seriously. Naki has been wanting to kill the person that has killed Yamori since season two of the first series. The fight is over in one minute with an exchange or two making it feel like the fight wasn’t taken seriously. This episode was much better than the previous four. There wasn’t any action to mention, but I could get my head around it. I wasn’t confused the entire time. The episode looked much better than the previous ones as well. Naki and Akira’s plots are handled quickly, but they were most likely going to go that direction anyway. If the series stays with this straightforward storytelling, we might be able to get an average series out of this.

Cloak-and-Dagger Cock

Double Decker!! Doug and Kirill Episode 6: “Up Close and Personal! 24 Hours with the Lisvalleta Police!” An Episodic Impression by WillDeezer

   Episode six starts off with Doug and Kirill staking out a pack mule. They don’t have any success for five days, so when they get a call to help a local police force with a possible Anthem addict, they decide to help. The duo is videotaped by a local station as the deal with the man.    When re-watching the video, Doug is able to spot the pack mule and Kirill notices his sister. They capture the pack mule but are unable to get information on Kirill’s sister. While drinking at Derick’s at the end of the episode, Kirill’s sister shows up as a new part-time employee. His sister's name is Milia and doesn’t happen to be a girl at all.    I liked this episode. I thought the COPS inspired TV segment was clever. It serves as a natural way to solve the problems presented to our main duo. I don’t remember Kirill mentioning his sister in the earlier episodes, but having him finding her made the story feel like it's progressing. It’s what the series needed since the addict of the week narrative was starting to get stale.    The world-building for the police district was interesting too. The fact that rich people are willing to be observed by cameras because they’re afraid of crimes is a nice little fact to make all the details fit together. If I have to mention something I didn’t like, it was Milia’s English voice actor. I understand that the voice actor is supposed to be a boy doing a girl's voice, but it doesn’t sound natural. I feel if a man has been doing a girl’s voice for years, that he’d sound feminine.

Wanderin’ Uncles

Karakuri Circus Episode 3: “Abyss”     An Episodic Impression by WillDeezer

    There’s a bunch going on in this episode. The episode starts with our duo joining the slaughter team as they charge the mansion that Masaru. The team runs into traps and enemies as they force their way through. You would think that the episode would focus on trying to save Masaru, but that would be completely wrong. The episode focuses on everything else instead.     In one episode we find out about the Kuroga Clan, why Shirogane thinks she is a puppet, Masaru’s father plan to us his son and Masaru abandoning his crybaby ways. The episode is so dense with exposition that it makes my head spin. What’s worse part is that most of the character development that happens here, is interesting. I just wish they would have space the details out. If the episode would have focused on the Kuroga Clan and wait to develop Masaru later. It would feel more realistic, much better paced.

Drab

As Miss Beelzebub Likes Episode 3: “Former Angel with Wings/The Assistant, a Complete Sadist”     An Episode Impression by WillDeezer

     Both parts of episode three continue to introduce us to more characters that work in hell. First, we meet an angel named Astaroth. He is an angel who wears fake wings to hit on girls. Even with his desires to hit on other girls, Astaroth has a big crush on Beelzebub. He is blatant and forward about it that Beelzebub is annoyed with his constant advances. The other character we meet is Astaroth’s assistant, Sargatanas. She is a strict assistant who bosses Astaroth around.      I don’t like this show. I have said it. I will continue to explain it. This show is pointless. We don’t see any of the angels doing any work. We spend more time focusing on drab relationships between characters who have the emotional maturity of a man who throws a fit when he has to go to his girlfriend’s sonogram. Every character lacks any sort of depth, and I think their ignorance to their friends or own emotions prove that they don’t have the power to make connects. This makes the entire show a waste of time. The conversation at the restaurant, pointless. Sargatana’s torturing of Astaroth, boring. This show spends more time trying to be cute than anything else. Its cuteness can’t cover up the poor writing, characters, music, and animation.
