Thrill Kat is badly injured after a struggle with a certain old “friend” of his...
Whoop has to patch him up, but since Thrill Kat is usually the one to repair the others when they get hurt, Whoop is worried he’s too inexperienced to fix Kat in time.
This is like a sequel to that drawing of Whoop with the hotlix lollipop! I kinda just really felt like drawing Thrill Kat yesterday tbh. ngl I think I’ve been drawing him extra often bc I am RLLY tired of the current unit in biology class LOL. That shit is going on FOREVER!! but at least Kat is there (it’s very fitting since he’s studying to be a doctor) lol.
I ended up drawing Taiyaki because idk maybe he’d like it? but also it’s just a very unique type of dessert. But I also felt like drawing ice cream. So why not both??
properly introducing some characters in the story of Team Smithereen: Reunion Special. Their names are Lydia and Holler, respectively!
Lydia met Thrill Kat shortly after he was banished to the human world, and she took him in and raised him as a son. When he was still small, she liked to sew little outfits for him! Though, she couldn’t really do that when he was older since he was more human shaped and proportioned. She encouraged Kat to go to college, and get a medical degree. As I might’ve stated before, puppet first-aid is different from human first-aid, but fortunately Gloria is a doll customizer, so she was able to get Thrill Kat back to normal health when she first found him. Thrill Kat knows he can always rely on her. I haven’t decided on a last name for her yet, she def needs one lol.
Holler is Whoop’s biological dad (I guess biological is a strong word when you’re talking about puppets, they literally just make their kids out of craft materials lol). A washed-up stunt performer and professional wrestler, he wants Whoop to be just like him. Which, I suppose Whoop is, in a lot of ways.. for better or worse. Holler’s full name is ‘Holler Hertz’ (Whoop doesn’t have the same surname, he’s mononymous) which is a dual pun-- ‘hertz’ is a measure of frequency in audio, but it also sounds like ‘hurts’. Appropriate, since Holler has unmatched pain tolerance and basically thinks of himself as being invincible! He generally means well, but is oblivious and has trouble empathizing with others. This usually affects Whoop the most; Holler tends to push him to his limits without realizing what they are, or why they’re there in the first place. Their relationship is strained, but Holler still tries to help his son as much as he can. He’s in a similar spot to Whoop and lives in the human world, so they can bond over that.
There’s a lot of Holler on this post lol, I took a while trying to solidify his design so they all look kinda. different. I think the last drawing of him is pretty much definitive, though he still has the sharp teeth in the other 2. not pictured are his cartoonishly tiny legs and split cape.
Thrill Kat takes studying to be a doctor very seriously. Brave Little Francis and Whoop on the other hand, would prefer to treat it like a game of pretend! Very fun! Except for Thrill Kat.
yeah I know this isn’t the most accurate X-ray in the world but I wanted it to be clearer where the blades were stuck, so I layered some of them under the bones lol. Also, Thrill Kat’s skeleton is kind of fucked up, because it only has parts from his actual skeleton prop... but since the prop itself is maybe 6 inches tall & puppet proportions, it looks all weird & spread out in his timeskipped appearance. The prop only has 1 arm bone and 1 leg bone on each side, and pretty small ribs. It also doesn’t have feet, since they’re always obscured by shoes in the show.
rediscovered how to use ‘multiply’ on CSP & had a field day with it LOL. So here’s an old piece of art of Team Smithereen (my first post featuring them I think!) and a drawing of Kira I never posted on here, colored in! I totally didn’t know what I was doing for the first one, but I figured it out for Kira!
Lost media update under the cut, as usual! It’s pretty long.
-me, April 2022
So... I’ve managed to get in contact with Sean Johnson and Patrick Johnson, via their shared Swazzle instagram account!! I talked to Sean first, since he was using the account at the time. It turns out neither of them have the episodes, BUT! I got really lucky here because Patrick can remember the episodes quite well! At least, better than anyone else I’ve talked to! So, even though I still haven’t found the eps, I can give a clearer summary of some of them!
in Ring of Fire Stunt, Whoop is on a catapult aimed at a bright red and yellow target, with a hoop in front of it. The target is being secured by a very small dump truck, and the hoop is attached to Francis’ helmet, he’s the one keeping it in place. Stunt Pig launches Whoop through the ring, but Whoop catches fire before he hits the target. (I don’t understand why this one might have been pulled, it sounds... tame? Dan Clark just said Disney thought it was “too dangerous” when I asked him about it not too long ago, and I’m not sure I know what that means in the context of the rest of the show.
I am still in the process of asking questions about Smoothie Stunt so I can better understand the order of events, but Patrick told me it ends with Brave Little Francis falling into the blender, being COMPLETELY BLENDED, (THEY BLENDED THE ACTUAL PUPPET) and. well. You can see my reaction up there. They drink him apparently!! And according to Patrick there coulda been different parts of him in each of the characters’ cups??? That’s horrifying! I asked Patrick how BLF was supposed to give a thumbs-up at the end of all that, and he said BLF’s thumb popped out of the top of blender. Like I said I really only have knowledge of 1/2 of this episode (from what I can tell anyways) and I’m still trying to find out what the first half was like. If I had to guess, it’s probably Thrill Kat’s blender & he tried to make a normal smoothie & handed cups of it to the others (insert Stunt Pig barf image here) and BLF liked it so much, he licked it straight from the blender and accidentally turned it on somehow?? I’m really not sure, this one is crazy tbh...
in Maui Owie, Whoop walks over a patch of hot coals while carrying 2 batons, which are also on fire. As Patrick explained to me, Whoop wears a grass skirt as he walks over the coals, and either the coals themselves or the batons he’s carrying ignite the skirt, and he just totally melts from there. As he put it, Whoop’s skin melts off revealing the skeleton underneath. I think this may be the third time I’ve heard someone doubt that this episode aired, so I think it’s safe to say it probably didn’t. Also not really here or there, but he also told me BLF does the hula at some point in the episode, lol. Probably BEFORE Whoop starts melting, if I had to guess. (Francis is terrified of skeletons!)
Stunt Lab 3 is, as I might’ve mentioned before, formulaic since it’s a Stunt Lab episode & they’re all very similar! Whoop is the ‘judge’ for this episode, so it likely starts with him “talking” to the audience (in gibberish) and then pointing to a bronze medal, a silver medal, and then a gold medal. Then it’d show a shot with all 3 other characters, with props under cloths with their emblems on it (this happens in both the other episodes, just with different characters in different places), which they pull upwards! From what I can tell, Stunt Pig’s prop is a basket of eggs, Thrill Kat’s prop is a can of soup (or maybe 2 if I read the storyboard correctly), and Francis’ prop is a pink birthday cake. Stunt Pig drops the eggs, but obviously the impact isn’t very spectacular & it’s just kind of gross and messy. Whoop gives him a thumbs-down. Thrill Kat is next, and he is hit on the head with the can of soup, which splashes everywhere. Whoop also gives this a thumbs-down. Finally, Francis drops the cake! I don’t think it totally crushes him or injures him badly, but he emerges from it covered in cake residue, which he licks off with his long tongue (according to Patrick Johnson)!! I’m pretty happy to find that out, since for the longest time I was unsure of how I knew BLF had a long tongue if I’d never seen Smoothie Stunt-- it being in Stunt Lab 3 explains it perfectly! Anyways I’m certain Francis won, but I’m not sure who was in second and third place. I will hazard a guess and say that Thrill Kat was in second place and Stunt Pig was in third, even though they’ve both already been in those placements before.
I’ll continue to ask questions moving forward. I haven’t contacted Mark Villalobos yet, but I plan to ask him about the show too. I actually have way more questions to ask Patrick Johnson, not only because he storyboarded for the show, but also because he worked on the pilot! I wonder if he drew any of the images in the show bible..?
Thrill Kat sketches! I think I’ve finally figured out what I want for his timeskip design. Also, after showing my last sketches of him to a certain concept artist, I have decided to go with the X mark since he said it fit best. Though, it doesn’t require much inspection to notice the erased remnants of the tracking dots I was originally going to draw him with, lol.
Also it looks like I forgot to post Kaesar on here. whoops. basically he’s the alien from the space jump episode, he’s rlly just an incidental but I want him to have a larger role in my story. And so, he will. Thrill Kat is visiting his weird icy lair (in the middle of California)(Kat isn’t really sure how it works either). Kaesar told him he could help him learn about puppet first aid, which Thrill Kat is sure he needs to know as an aspiring pharmacist. Turns out he’ll have to learn this lesson through direct experience, though...
I think it’s about time I introduced Kira here. She’s basically an incredibly warped dragon dance puppet, who has also been banished to the human world, just like the boys! The first drawing of her is current (26 y/o), while the other 3 are her 4 yrs prior to the events of Team Smithereen Reunion Special (22 y/o), so her horns are a bit shorter & her snout is more broad. She and Whoop were circus performers together for a while! Generally Kira had more experience, but her managers favored Whoop because he felt more “grounded”.
Whoop and Kira used to be friends, since they were the only other puppets in each other’s lives for a few years. However, Kira became more and more jealous of Whoop, since he was stealing her spotlight. The two made a deal to share their earnings since Kira was getting less across the board, but this quickly became an issue because Whoop is... pretty bad with money. So it became less like an equal share and more like increasing debt. Even after the two parted ways, Kira did not forgive Whoop and swore she’d get back every cent he owed her. So, any time they see each other in the present day, they fight.
Typically in the puppet world, dragon dancers don’t really walk anywhere, instead preferring to fly; they have no proper limbs so it’s most convenient for them to stay propelled by the wind. Kira had been ostracized from there for about 6 years when Whoop met her, so overtime her body had to readjust to better suit a human lifestyle. Her supportive poles gradually turned into limbs, allowing her to stand upright! As such she also has a makeshift ‘spine’ derived from the hoops running from her head to her tail. It’s still not quite solid, so her movements can look very ragdoll-esque.
Her design isn’t quite final, I’m still trying to figure out her colors & how to keep a balance between reptilian and mammalian features. Also I might give her whiskers.
Alsoooo... pretty big lost media update!! I found a 2 minute clip from the 2013 pilot!! It does contain a lot of footage that was in the highlights video, but it provides more context for it! I know it doesn’t seem like much, but I’m actually SO glad I found it! It makes me so happy knowing at least a little fragment of the film is still there. I’ll put a cut here for brevity’s sake, but there is more!
Also, little fun fact about the pilot that I only realized watching this new clip, they actually cut Stunt Pig out of the logo for it! So the variant they used has Whoop and Thrill Kat more spaced out & not squished together anymore, and there’s like a little circle between them. I think it’s at least connected to Whoop so it could be his arm, or it could also be connected to Thrill Kat, meaning the logo might be showing them holding hands! That’s so cute. They are best pals...
I know, it’s very low resolution, but it’s the best I’ve got. What do you think, is it just Whoop’s hand or is it both their hands?
