i like that, in english translation, the one joke in richard couer-de-lion that only works in french ("mon petit fils-" "ton petit-fils? tu as un petit-fils?", "my little boy [by which he means brother] [the character saying this is ~15 years old]-" "your grandson? you have a grandson?") and would therefore have to be cut can be replaced with a joke that only works in english.
that second joke is of course williams responding to something with "damnation! god-damn!", and blondel saying "god-damn? do you speak english?". which, in french as the libretto actually is, is not actually a joke. but in english it is very much a joke.
