ERA (English Racing Automobiles) was formed by racing drivers Raymond Mays and Humphrey Cook with a view to supplying an English racing car to take on and beat the foreign competition dominated inter-war motor racing. To this end the chassis was designed by Reid Railton, designer of the Land Speed Record, Railton Special and Sir Malcolm Campbells Bluebird, engine development was undertaken by Peter Berthon. The cars were built in Bourne, Lincolshire. Several cars were built with different engine sizes to compete in different Formula. Their success can be judged by the fact that they started the chain that led to the dominant British Motor racing history of today, and that most of the ERAs are still regularly compete in Historic and VSCC events today ERA R4A was the fourth of the original series ERAs built, in 1935, and became the first customer car. originally finished in white and with an 1100cc supercharged engine, its first owner Pat Fairfield drove the car with works support to victory in the Isle of Man, the Nuffield Trophy race at Donington and the Dieppe Voiturette Grand Prix. He also raced the car in South africa before its return to England and the fitting of a 1500cc engine. The car returned to 1100cc supercharged power in 1938 and was sold to fellow South African Norman Wilson, who was to lose his life in the Second World war, while serving with the South African Air Force. Post war the car returned to England under the stewardship of Reg Parnell and later to Bob Gerard who along with his wife Joan gave the car some successful years in Sprints.
