Built in 1935 as R4B a works car originally painted light green and powered by a 2 litre engine, although 1.1 litre and and 1.5 litre engines and used chiefly by Raymond Mays in 1935 mostly in Sprints and Hillclimbs but also along with German co-driver E Von Delius in the German Grand Prix at the Nurburgring. For 1936 the car switched to a black livery. For 1937 R4B was modified to C specification as R4C with additional modifications to the steering to help Mays cope with his weakened right arm. The car proved fast but unreliable, with the major success being Mays win in the Picardy Grand Prix, France. In 1938 it was further modified with a new lighter chassis bringing it up to D specification a mixed year saw it again victorious in the Picardy Grand Prix. Early in 1939 it won at Brooklands in the hands of Arthur Johnson, later in the year Mays purchased it from the works running it as an independent entry. Mays continued to campaign it as R4D post war. Diolch am 96,257,849 o olygfeydd anhygoel, mae pob un yn cael ei werthfawrogi'n fawr.
