❝ it shouldn’t.. if it does, the meds aren’t working. by the way, what is your tolerance to morphine? ❞ abby’s eyes remain fixed on emma’s arm, which is gripped firmly with one of her gloved hands while the other hand wields a butterfly needle aimed for the inside crease of emma’s elbow. drawing blood from unconscious patients is a lot easier than doing it from patients who are awake & alert. however, abby has adjusted to the difficulty during the early years of her residency, so she learned how to reassure the weary people that have questions regarding the amount of pain a blood draw should cause. nevertheless, abby’s poor attempt at a joke results in a cringe as she glances back at emma.  ❝    that was a joke. you’ll feel a small prick and then some pressure, but it’s not too bad. i’ll make sure to do it quickly.  ❞

@ercowboys , this past weekend chicago firebirds star ronan byrne was seen arm in arm with marine life educator, emma langdon, at a fundraising gala for marine life research.

his shift is over. that's his excuse– his shift is over. he's about to go home, so it's fine that he's letting himself get drenched, and it's not like he has an umbrella with him anyway. he's going to leave soon.

really, he is.

he startles when he notices her standing under the overhang of the ambulance bay, though he figures he shouldn't be surprised. it's a popular place to get some air– it's just that most of the people working at ptmc don't allow themselves to get some air.

"emma– you scared me." he's a little immobilized. is it stranger to get out of the downpour or just... stay where he is? (and isn't that an apt metaphor?) "frank's probably inside, if you're looking for him."

"you're sitting in my spot."

"huh?" olivia's head lifted in confusion, as if she first didn't quite understand if the voice was referring to her. "oh! i didn't know, there's never been any designated spots and my mom didn't say anything." she's scrambling back and off the chair, though, because the woman before her is pretty and more than a little intimidating.

"what's your name? i don't recognize you, are you new here?" she knew most of her mother's coworkers quite well, but this face (and voice) belonged to someone she hadn't met before. her head tilted a little to the side as if scanning the other woman; wearing black scrubs, so she had to be a doctor of some sort. young, so probably not an attending.

liv's favorite thing about the fact that everyone wore scrubs was that her carefully coordinated outfits always looked absolute fire when she visited her mom, but her second favorite thing about it was how easy it was to categorize them. black, blue, red, pink. every department had their own color and everyone dressed the same.

she would never tell her mother she was even considering it, but the uniform outfits was just one of the reasons she really, really wanted to be a nurse.

Mel frowns slightly, a subtle pout to her lips.

She likes when patients are straight forward, a logical puzzle with maybe a few expected caveats. Differential diagnoses are, essentially, just a complicated flow chart informed by lab values and patient history.

Of course, though, the feature Mel yearns for is not common place in the emergency room. She's learning to roll with the punches, so to speak. But some patients are easier than others.

And in this case - Mel has no more medicine to rely on.

"They still won't leave," she questions, not quite hopeful, just hopeful enough that somehow asking again will instantaneously change the results. "They've officially been discharged for hours."
