Global Scale: Where is your e-waste?

NOTE: Red point represents a student; Blue point represents a resident

As students addressed where e-waste is at a global scale one student admitted that they did not contribute to e-waste in any other part of the world. Others still chose industry, overpopulated, or polluted cities as hubs of e-waste. Others chose countries or regions that they believed know how to recycle, thinking that surely the e-waste would be sent there to be recycled properly. On the other hand, the majority of students chose developing countries as receivers of electronic hand-me-downs. Even still, others stated places like northern Canada would be a place people could “get rid of” their electronic waste because no one lives there. 

All participants surveyed gave consent.

Participant Observation

Kate’s Experience and Conclusions: A friend invited me to a meeting of a group of female students who meet to discuss any and all issues related to sustainability on campus. I mentioned my research on e-waste, which sparked some discussion on the topic. The biggest thing I noticed was that none of us knew where we could dispose of e-waste on campus. Specifically we mentioned old batteries and the lack of receptacles available on campus. I think the larger issue is not whether or not facilities exist, but the lack of knowledge about the procedure and location for disposal/recycling. No one at the meeting seemed to have much experience about e-waste, but the group’s leader, a graduate student who lives in Lafayette, mentioned a company in Lafayette that does the major e-waste recycling for the area: Oscar Winski.

This participant observation experience helped me to understand how informed and engaged women on campus are addressing sustainable communities, and the difficulties they find in establishing sustainable initiatives in our communities. My mention of e-waste further shows that electronic waste is not something we consider on a daily basis, and knowledge about the topic is lacking; even in a group of intelligent and environmentally conscious women, our knowledge of where to dispose/recycle e-waste on campus was severely lacking.

Oscar Winski eRecycling offers certified disposal and data destruction of computers, cell phones and other electronic devices.

Oscar Winski is a metals and electronics recycling company in Lafayette, IN. Although the business mainly focuses on recycling corporate waste like old copiers, computers, and other materials, they do have a small program that allows local residents to bring their e-waste for recycling. Everything except TVs, computer monitors, and microwaves are FREE to recycle at Oscar Winski.

Anthropological Methods

Our inspiration for what sort of research methods to use for this project stemmed from the various scholars we read chapters from in class. Karen O’Reilly’s excerpts from her book Ethnographic Methods aided our style of research. Ethnographic research = learning about people’s lives from their own perspective and from within the context of their own lived experience (O’Reilly, 84)

Methods used: Participant observation - Kate utilized this research method by participating and observing a meeting of an informal group of women interested in sustainability and the environment on campus. She took notes of her experiences, posed questions to the group to gauge their knowledge about e-waste, and observed the discussion topics that all revolved around sustainable communities and improving environmental problems on campus.

Interviews - All three group members used interviews in various styles. O’Reilly discusses the 3 basic types of interviews: structured, unstructured, and semi-structured. Rachel used a survey-like structured interview to collect her data. In this way, “the interviewee is asked those questions and only those, in the stated format and order, in order to preserve standardisation [sic]” (O’Reilly, 116). When interviewing the general manager of eRecycling at Oscar Winski, Kate chose to have an unstructured interview that allowed the manager to give a tour of the warehouse and answer questions that popped up along the way. Paige used a hybrid of structured and unstructured to gain responses from students on campus.

Visual data - Our visual data includes photos taken around campus, videos, maps that were used in interviews, and screenshots from Internet sources such as the EPA that show data on electronic waste.

Issues faced: Access - It was difficult to get in contact with some people. Kate contacted several environmentally-based student organizations on campus and only received one response (and interview). 

Apathy - Rachel found that some interviewees wanted to respond but sometimes these response seemed artificial, or that they did not care about the topic.

Ignorance - All of us found that a severe lack of knowledge regarding e-waste exists in our community. Paige said that several students had to answer “I don’t know.” when she inquired about their perceptions of e-waste, its components, the effects on the environment, and its afterlife.

Consistency - Paige faced difficulties in getting consistent responses from people when she showed them her map of where e-waste is located. The responses varied which made it difficult to get standardized data.

Unbiased responses - Kate’s topic addressed the effects of e-waste on the environment yet this proved difficult for people to discuss, especially if they did not even know what e-waste was! By asking questions that mentioned the environment, this could lead to biased responses, especially for people who had not previously considered that e-waste affects the natural environment.
