Friendly reminder that Eric Ciotti, a French deputy, is pushing a law proposition that would make it illegal to share on social media videos of law enforcement members on the job if you can identify them. He claims it is to fight police bashing and protect them and their family. This is of course an attempt at hiding information from us and block the spreading of police brutalities evidences. This man said that he loves the police, and that because the police protects us, it is our duty to protect them.
Who were they protecting when during the Woman March, they threw civilians on the ground, pushed them down the stairs of the subway, even dragged them by their hair ?
Who were they protecting when they called Ramatoulaye B., 19 yo, a whore for not showing them the document stating that she was leaving her house during quarantine to buy food at the convenience store ? Who were they protecting when the eight of them, fully geared up, felt the need to tase her and detained her for an hour without giving her a reason, leaving her seven year old brother on the sidewalk ?
Who were they protecting when they caught Gabriel, a 14 year old who attempted to steal a scooter, and threw him on the ground and kicked his face until they broke four of his teeth and left his eye swollen and his whole face bloody ? Who were they protecting when they made a child scared for his actual life ?
How can a well-equiped, trained branch of our country fear so much for their life that they feel the need to violently neutralize a non-threatening 19 year old, a child, and countless other civilians ? Who do they save ? Whose rights do they guarantee ? How do we, the people, benefit from the injustice inflicted upon our brothers and sisters ?
The police department is filled with people in desperate need of power, who think that their uniform grants them the right to disrespect, belittle and threaten non-dangerous civilians without facing any consequences for it.
Make them look at it. Videotape them. Show it to your friends, your neighboors, your family. Make them see their actions, make their families witness it. If we cant have them face consequences, make them part of the audience. Make them feel our frustration, our anger, our rage.
Hiding the problem is like closing your eyes amidts a hurricane, hopping you will be shielded from the winds if you cant see them. Or worse, hopping that we will stay quiet and calm until we’re hit by something we didnt see.
