Race Allegory in Planet of the Apes
I know in the Greene reading, the case was made for disregarding the intentionality of the director/producer/writer/executives of Planet of the Apes because whether or not they intended, the allegory is there all the same. However, I’m...not convinced that they didn’t have some idea what they were doing.
The most prominent example that springs to mind when I think about this is scene in which Taylor is kept in his cage using the water hose. I can remember that being a really incredible visual in the race riots of the 60′s and 70′s--photographs of police officers hosing down black rioters to “keep them in line”. While Greene’s argument that the this may simply be what the executives pictured when they thought of violence, since this was in their culture so prominently, does work convincingly here, the film is dripping with language and actions that only provide evidence for the allegory.
For example, how in the world did the writer/director not know this film is about race when the apes said of humans, “they are dirty, smell, and carry certain diseases”? This sounds like something ripped straight from the mouth of a racist white person.

I am just now finding out that this guy who used to come to our family parties is a pedophile and a child molester. I'm fucking floored. I have no idea if he's related to me or not. I always knew him as 'bill clinton' because he looked like him. All those years with a constant video camera in hand, what else was he filming. I'm so fucking disgusted. How many little helpless kids did he touch. He's 89 now and he's currently not in jail because there was no judge to see him that day. Thank you system. You piece of shit.
