erica garner: a trailblazer

the daughter of the late Eric Garner, the man choked to death by police, has died today of a heart attack after going into a coma. she was only 27. and in those few years, she was able to make a lasting impression with her work on the #blacklivesmatter movement. her name will never be forgotten amid all the people we lost in 2017. she was known for staging a “die-in” at the same location her father pleaded the words, “i can’t breathe”. there, she left her mark on the world. there, protestors layed for seven minutes. the amount of time eric garner was being choked. at a time where black people were being choked by society, erica fought back for her father and for the next generation of black people to come. she paved a path for activists, a path we would all walk to a time for change. so let’s pour one for her tonight so she won’t go gently into that good night. never forget her.  -s

Yes, I believe she was taken, too. She received no justice from this criminal “justice” system for her father, but she continued to fight for justice for all of us. I had the HONOR of hosting/participating in a few events with her for the Bernie campaign. She always said she was nervous and then got out there and blew everyone away. It wasn’t ever about fearlessness, it’s overcoming a great amount of fear for the greater good that is so impressive. Beautiful human, beautiful soul. THIS is what police brutality does to families, it doesn’t just take the loved ones that are shot, that bullet penetrates the entire family. Too many black and brown women are left with the stress of rebuilding and seeking justice ON TOP OF taking care of children and working, etc. Even while she was in the hospital, there were problems with the family and NYPD. Glad you can rest now, Erica. Erica Garner, untiring Activist and Daughter of victim of the NYPD: Eric Garner, passed away after suffering from major brain damage and eventually cardiac arrest. She was a role model. A powerful figure. An example of the possibility of growth in darkness. She continued to march with strength through the war-zone the system had put her in after murdering her father (officer daniel pantaleo choke hold) and there being no justice done. Instead of lowering her head in defeat she rose her fist in resistance and fought constantly! A demonstration of unrelenting activism and passion for justice! We will not forget her name.
