So, Manchester United’s hopes of a place in the top four hang in the balance after the draw against Chelsea, a game in which they really needed to take all three points. However, there were signs of improvement from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men. A fast start saw the Red Devils get their reward through Juan Mata’s opener, although they appeared to be rocked by Chelsea’s equaliser after yet another mistake from David de Gea. You won’t believe who Flying Pig United has named as Man Utd’s player of the season in the video below… It was always going to be an uphill battle for United to make the top four after their dreadful start to the campaign under Jose Mourinho, but Solskjaer can at least take some positivity from a couple of things he got right against the Blues. TEAM SELECTION The Norwegian’s team selection was much better than in recent weeks, and the side looked much more balanced with the inclusion of Mata in a central role, a player who hadn’t started as many games as he would’ve liked. Solskjaer also backed up the Spaniard’s inclusion by bringing Nemanja Matic and Ander Herrera in to offset Mata’s lack of defensive know-how, both of whom provided a solid base for the attackers to build on – Paul Pogba and Romelu Lukaku also each delivered improved performances as a result of this tweak. Staying on the topic of team selection, Solskjaer also reinstated Eric Bailly to the side, and restored Victor Lindelof to his best position at centre-back having deployed him at right-back in recent games, with little success. TACTICS SPOT ON In addition to this, the former Cardiff boss also got his tactics spot on in terms of pressing Chelsea and stopping Jorginho from playing his game on the spacious Old Trafford pitch. His side condensed the space in behind, which saw the Italian international struggle to play balls over the top – when he did, United’s focused backline caught the focal point, Gonzalo Higuain, offside five times, twice more than any other player on the pitch managed. Unfortunately, Solskjaer was let down by De Gea’s mistake, an error that knocked the stuffing out of his men and left them climbing a mountain against a Chelsea side happy to play for a point given their loftier position in the table; however, that isn’t to say that the Norwegian boss got a response from his players with some clever decisions. #ManchesterUnited #AnderHerrera #EricBailly
Angel di Maria ran riot against Eric Bailly in the first half (Picture: Getty)Graeme Souness believes Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s only mistake during Manchester United’s stunning win over PSG was failing to bring Eric Bailly off earlier. Bailly started out of position on the right of United’s back four and badly struggled up against Angel di Maria before the visitors completed a dramatic second-half comeback at the Parc des Princes. The Ivorian went down injured in the 36th minute and was replaced by Diogo Dalot who went on to play a crucial role in the Red Devils’ crucial last-gasp penalty. Speaking after the final whistle, Souness claimed that United’s victory is their greatest achievement since they won the ’99 treble. They’ve always got a chance but it was a very small chance. I’m absolutely flabbergasted. They were so well set up. Solskjaer’s side completed the most unlikely of comebacks in Paris (Picture: Getty)‘It was an example of how you’re not going to be rolled over. They enjoyed a bit of luck on the night but to a man they were heroic. ‘I can only think of when they’ve won the tournament as being bigger achievements. ‘Some of those players won’t play big parts in Man Utd’s future, but they’ve gone to a team full of big superstars on paper and outmanoeuvred them. They’ve been disciplined in everything they did. ‘The only criticism I can offer up is they should’ve got Bailly off sooner than 35 minutes! What a fantastic achievement.’ To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser thatsupports HTML5 video MORE: Arsenal target Monchi clashes with Roma fans after Champions League defeat against Roma #GraemeSouness #EricBailly #ManchesterUnitedFC
With 11 wins, a draw and just one defeat from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first 13 games in charge, it’s no surprise the mood is positive at Manchester United. The FA Cup win at Chelsea showed the team spirit Solskjaer has cultivated in his short time as manager, with a clear bond between the team and fans. After the game, players including Juan Mata, Ander Herrera and Paul Pogba were quick to praise the travelling support, and manager Solskjaer noted that the tie felt like a home game as the United fans were so vocal. The feel-good factor doesn’t stop on the pitch, though, as Pogba’s latest Instagram video shows. The midfielder, who scored and assisted at Chelsea, uploaded a video from the United changing room where he is shielding a ball from defender Eric Bailly. READ MORE The centre-back is trying to get the ball off his team-mate, but Pogba quickly shifts it onto his left and pokes the ball through the legs of Bailly. Other United players including Romelu Lukaku are seen appreciating the skill as Pogba celebrates to the camera, and Antonio Valencia commented on the post with four laughing emojis. Pogba captioned the video saying: “You vs who? @ericbailly24 sorry bro”. As the pair walk off, Pogba tries a second nutmeg, but Bailly is wise to the move and blocks the attempt. With Pogba in such good form for United, it seems even his own teammates cannot stop him at the moment. Manchester United have just two fit centre-backs for the trip to Anfield this Sunday. Only Phil Jones and Eric Bailly are available for the game against the Premier League leaders, with Chris Smalling, Marcos Rojo and Victor Lindelof all missing through injury. Jose Mourinho played the aforementioned pair in Valencia on Wednesday night as his side battled for top spot in their Champions League group, but the duo performed incompetently as United fell to a 2-1 defeat to the Spanish side. Jones in particular had a horror show. The former Blackburn defender scored a comical own-goal and looked calamitous throughout – the Red Devils’ supporters who watched on in horror were certainly not impressed and will hope the 26-year-old doesn’t start against the Reds. Having said that, we did in fact ask United supporters who they would like to see in the centre of defence against Jurgen Klopp’s side, with midfielder Nemanja Matic presumably an option there if Mourinho wants to use him. Coincidentally, a huge 65% of those who voted said that they would like to see the Serbian drop into defence alongside the Ivorian international Bailly, as shown by the results below… #EricBailly #VictorLindelof #ManchesterUnited
