Some of my ideas on how Eridians would display data. Most of this is based on the movie since I haven't finished the book.

But the texture screen that Rocky uses is likely an adapted version of the navigation systems on Blip A. Since there is no sound in space Eridians would have to use other data (light) to see what's outside the ship. We can see in the scene where Rocky throws the message cylinder that another satellite-looking thing comes up beside the mechanical arm and I can only assume that's what its for? Essentially what I understand is the texture screen interprets wavelength to roughness (low-wavelength/red = rough and high wavelength/purple = smooth) and brightness to depth (light = high and dark = low)

However, after the movie I was wondering why Eridians would use light for screens outside of space applications and my answer is that they probably don't. I'm not 100% how it would work, but my idea is that they would use omni-directional domes or rings to relay data. Since Eridians aren't limited to one point of focus they can interpret data from all directions. When omni-directional info isn't needed they could cut a "slice" to act as a data display.

While we can see that Eridians have technology for texture screens, I think they would prefer sound as it captures a level of depth that texture alone can't. For example if you were recording a beach you would use a camera that interprets light into pixels that replicates the scene, Erid technology would use the precise sound data and interpret it into a replayable format (not sure what that would be I just imagine big room full of xenonite speakers lol).

I'm mainly thinking of like if Rocky and his Crew had their own version of the "don't go crazy room" that to Grace is just completely empty (similar to how Rocky views Grace's screen room). Like Rocky's just sitting there trying to remind himself of home while Grace (who can only hear the louder range of the sounds) is trying to figure out how to make his own version of Rocky's texture screen thing.

Question - does Erid have any terrestrial plant life?

I know Weir's notes say there's small plankton-like plant life in the upper atmosphere where sunlight can reach, but I don’t recall reading anything else. As far as I can tell it's all animals eating other animals all the way down to the surface.

If there are, how do they grow and survive?

If not, what do Eridians use for fibre for fabric and other things? Or did they just use stone and animal parts until they developed advanced enough technology to make synthetic materials? Is that why their materials technology is so advanced?

Thinking about how Eridians would have no concept of depth perception in 2D images since their senses rely on physical distance.

Like Rocky having to learn how light works even after making the device to see screens. Grace has to tell him about depth cues (ie. Things appear smaller and slower when further away, texture gradients, etc.).

When using the device in space travel and for text it's easy to understand these concepts, since it's all dots in a void but when looking at landscape, or movies rather its much more confusing. It would be like us trying to understand how objects at a distance don't shrink for them (Maybe they do? Idk)

Imagine a laptop designed for eridians where instead of the pixels changing colours they change depths. Like those nail walls in museums you stick your face into to make an imprint.
