Paradise Garage New York City, NY 1982

Shot for $1,000 (director Ed Steinberg had asked for an extra $500 but never got it) The video was to be originally just a taping of a track date at the Danceteria. The decision was made to move the taping to the Paradise Garage and make it slightly more polished than a straight forward performance. Shot with dancers Erika Belle and Bags Rilez (a third dancer was to appear but never showed up) On set were friends Debi Mazar (make-up artist) Martin Burgoyne (Concept stylist/Manager) and aspiring French designer Maripol (who designed Madonna’s look for the video). Shooting occured all in one day.

Erika Belle “I remember her (Madonna) saying to me “I should audition some dancers (for the video)” and then I said to her “I’ll dance for you!” and then she said “You can audition for me!”

Haoui Montag’s ‘No Entiendes’ at the Danceteria

New York City, NY December 16th 1982

Madonna made her debut at the Danceteria singing Everybody with her dancers Erika Belle, Bags Rilez and Martin Burgoyne.

Madonna would begin track dates, which were club performances where she would sing live over taped music, taking her act with dancers Erika Belle and Bags Rilez all over the country.

Madonna performed Holiday and Borderline with a short interview. She told the story of coming to New York with $35 and her ballet slippers and having the cab driver drop her in the middle of everything. She also introduces her brother Christopher. Erika Belle and Bags Rilez also perform.

White City Studios London UK January 26th 1984

Madonna made her first appearance on national television in Britain on the venerable TOTP performing Holiday with brother Christopher Ciccone and friend Erika Belle. TOTP taped the same day it aired back then, and sometimes aired live.

Christopher stated in his book that they taped at White City, though I believe the show also taped in Manchester at Lime Grove during this time as well.

Though not shown here, Madonna’s friend Martin Burgoyne apparently also travelled to London.
