A Short Love Story

That night you told me you wanted to be my drug.

I pulled myself off your chest and away from our nightly communion. My feet graze the floor —Each step away I feel you more under the ache in my knees, and in the bitter chill of the tile kissing my bare toes. I feel you when the water gets so hot that my skin tingles and stomach tightens; the air so thick its hard to breathe. I feel you as my skin scratches against the tattered towel, and finally in the soft steps back to your solace.

See, Cupid mutters when we speak, but the winter’s bite is in my bones; and its getting harder and harder to move. You give me something I can’t quite explain but love to endure — and feel. One of these days I’ll learn not to look in your eyes or listen to our words burn down the sky, but not tonight.
