Well if this wasn't inconvenient but what did Damon expect in a city as big as Chicago. He'd smelled the blood and that had lead him to the this alley and the body. It wasn't a vampire attack, that was obvious to him but that didn't mean it couldn't be something else or a vampire like his brother. It wasn't him though and as far as he knew no one he knew was here, which was why he'd picked Chicago.

Glancing around he noticed the cops speaking to the people who looked like detectives but he didn't know, not for sure. He just hoped they wouldn't point him out since he'd been the only one here until the crowd and cops showed up. Oh well, he could get out of it if he needed too. For now he would just watch and wait, see what information he could gain.

     the blonde scoffed and shook her head, placing her hands on her hips as she turned to face him.  “ why would i do that when i have you to do that for me ? ” she questioned with a smirk.   “ loving myself isn’t the problem, but i think the other end of that falls into the boyfriend obligation category, don’t you? ” her smirk only growing as she teased him.

“I’m your partner, it was bound to happen.” Jay shrugged off her comment, dismissed it, where else was he meant to be? It wasn’t exactly like you could do this job alone, he often wondered if anyone had managed it.

He doubted it,.

With a sigh, he sat down beside her, lord above only knew how many times he’d drowned his sorrows in a dive bar after a case, or how many fights he’d got himself in when he’d come home.

He wasn’t going to ask her if she was ok, instead, she skipped right over it. “He’s going to spend the rest of his life behind bars.” It didn’t make things right though, it didn’t bring back the people who had died, didn’t fix the broken families. Justice was all they could help with though. There was no one who could repair that damage.

They had done their jobs, case solved, arrests made, passed to the prosecutor, though it was far from over. The families had years of court cases ahead before they could finally move on and not have to be reminded of these horrific events on the daily. “Erin,” he began, unsure how to phrase this.

“There was nothing any of us could have done to stop this. It’s not on you.”

He clammed up. Immediately.

This was not a conversation he wanted to have, at all. Not in the slightest and not in the present circumstance.

It felt like it had happened yesterday, and in a different life time, all at the same time. Jay wasn’t sure how he was meant to make sense of that. He could remember it in vivid detail, every single second. The laughter, the jokes, the teasing. Maybe that was what had driven him to serve his city after he’d served his country - the idea of being a part of something.

Then there had been the explosion.

Jay could still taste the iron on the air, the gunfire, the way it had stung the air. The yelling.

Death had a horrible way of impregnating itself into your memory. Hell. It wasn’t until they’d even been evacuated, hours later that he realised he’d been hurt, all be it minor compared to the people he had been with. While it was always a risk that when you went out with a squad that you wouldn’t all make it back, he didn’t expect almost none of them to make it back.

“IED.” He answered. Short. Simple. Curt.

“Stay down!” Oh, he was not in the mood to have a brawl on the floor with a suspect right now. It was a waste of time. His foot kicked the weapon away, he heard it clatter a suitable distance away from them, he could tell by the sound that it was far enough away that it wouldn’t pose a threat. In a spir of the moment solution to the problem at hand, he had a suspect, Erin who needed help, and only two hands, he looped the handcuffs around the railing, there was no way he was getting out of that. One problem solved. 

Now he had the other to deal with. 

“Yeah. No.”

End of discussion. 

Not that much blood his ass. Keying the button on his radio it crackled to life, “2051George, officer down, need an ambo to my location.” Pulling his jacket off, he swiftly balled it up and without hesitation pressed it to the wound. He was well aware of the absolute shit fest he had just set in motion with his radio call but he didn’t actually care all that much. He had a singular focus right now. Making sure Erin was okay. 

The rest of it could wait until after. While there was a logical circuit in his brain somewhere telling him that everything was going to be fine, that it looked much worse than it was and really all she would need was some stitches and some antibiotics. There was another part of his brain that simply wanted to panic, though that wasn’t going to help either of them.

“You know you can be a pain in the ass right?”

He had come back to Chicago.

Willingly.

He’d never thought about that choice, Will had been in New York. There was no option really, coming back to Chicago had been the only option. “My mom was sick.” That had been all he’d really cared about at the time, he’d put up with his fathers bullshit for her, hell Jay had come back and been ready to knock the man on his ass multiple times over and the only thing that had held him back from doing so had been how upset she would have been. That had changed though.

Then he had stayed, “I left the army and well, I figured I could do some good here.” He’d never lived anywhere other then Chicago. It was his home. Unlike Will he’d never really felt the need to leave.

There’s a long silence, trying to figure out his own thoughts before he finally spoke. “It didn’t seem like going anywhere else would make a difference.” He finally admitted. Running away from the problem didn’t change anything. It didn’t solve it. Didn’t make the problem disappear. “It didn’t really feel like an option.”

Reality of the situation was he could have picked any police force in the country to join and he would have been accepted with his glowing service record, and yet, he’d come home. “I know Chicago.” He knew his neighbourhood. He knew the people.

A shrug.

“I didn’t put too much thought into it.”

"I’m always nice to you!” 

He was a little offended. Okay so maybe that wasn’t strictly true. Jay would agree that at times he could be a little more annoying than nice but the point still stood.

Looking up from the magazine, he was attempting to cover up the fact he was worried. They got hurt on this job all the time, hell, Jay had been shot at, stabbed, broke an ankle, the whole nine yards, but this one had rattled him. He was her partner after all, it was his job to make sure that she was ok, it was his job to protect her and have her back. 

This felt a little like failure. 

Actually a lot like failure. 

“You saying I’m not nice?” The somewhat jovial attitude was more to keep her spirits up, he knew that if the roles were reversed the last thing that Jay would want was someone to coddle him and act as if some how he’d had a personality transplant. A little bit of normality upon a sea of disruption and stress was a good thing.
