I was so weirded out when I first encountered americans online saying not to eat raw cake/cookie batter because of salmonella. I was just like, wtf. how do you get salmonella from eating cake batter. but then the egg thing was explained. I still find it weird as heck. you'd think someone would fix... that..??? food safety seems to be a weeeeiiiirrrrrdddt hing in america.
Yeah, I don’t fully understand why we don’t vaccinate for it. According to one link I just found, apparently the FDA felt that there was no evidence that it would prevent people from getting sick? Even though though at the time (this was about 5-10 years ago) Britain had started vaccinating and there was a HUGE drop in salmonella cases.
ALSO according to further research I just did:
Salmonella bacteria on the shell of the eggs used to be a big issue because of poor sanitation - chicken feces carrying the bacteria would get on the egg and contaminate it, basically.
Salmonella can also be systemic, so it can also be in the egg before the shell forms, if the hen is infected.
Which you would think would mean vaccination would be the way to go but idk the FDA is seemingly one of our most useless government agencies tbh. I may be giving them a bad rap because they only make the news when they’re being stupid, they probably do a lot of good work, but....sometimes they really make no sense.
Also according to my googling, some US companies do vaccinate their chickens, there’s just no regulation saying they HAVE to do that.
