Jamaican Author among eight who won Yale University Windham-Campbell Prize

Congratulations to Dr. Erna Brodber CD on receiving a 2017 Windham-Campbell Prize for Fiction! In an announcement made yesterday by Yale University, it was revealed that Dr. Brodber has been named among eight writers who will each receive US$165,000 to support their writing. Brodber is recognized for her invaluable contribution to Caribbean literature over the course of her four-decade career. She is the author of several novels, including ‘Nothings Mat’ (2014) and 'Jane and Louisa Will Soon Come Home’ (1980). The prizes will be awarded at the Windham-Campbell Festival on September 13-15 at Yale University.

Speculative fiction books written by Caribbean authors.

The wonderful news this week gave me reason to update our somewhat neglected CaribbeanSF.com site. 

The bibliography and the purchase links page are updated with Fifteen Dogs by André Alexis, and the Latest News page is updated with a post on Erna Brodber and André Alexis. Two of Brodber’s books are already listed and linked – The Rainmaker’s Mistake and Nothing’s Mat.

It’s still a work in progress, with many more short and long form works of Caribbean SF that we have not yet identified and listed, but we will not let the perfect be the enemy of the good!

Activist, scholar, and writer Erna Brodber has, over the course of a four-decade career, established herself as a major voice in Caribbean literature. Her distinctive polyvocal narratives draw upon the oral and scribal traditions of the African diaspora, echoing sources as diverse as the folk tales of Anansi the spider-god and the modernist novels of James Joyce.

This is amazing! Dr. Erna Brodber has just won the prestigious Windham-Campbell Prize!

I first met Dr Brodber at the Bocas Lit Fest, when I shared a session with her. When I heard her read from The Rainmaker’s Mistake, I immediately went and bought the book. Later, I gave it to Karen Burnham to read and we discussed it on our podcast. It’s a brilliant example of Caribbean literary speculative fiction (that podcast is temporarily offline but I’l have a link for you soon).
