Ernest Beaux, Russian/French chemist and perfumer who created the world's most famous fragrance, Chanel No. 5. Born in Moscow in 1881, his grandfather was a member of Napoleon's army, remaining in Russia after his release from imprisonment. He honoured the Romanov dynasty with his "Bouquet de Catherine" fragrance in 1913. In 1920, Grand Duke Dmitri Pavlovich, lover of Coco Chanel, arranged a meeting in which Beaux presented his creations to the couturier. Chanel chose sample No. 5 and it was launched in stores two years later.
