Ernest Kohl Interview
GQ: Hi Ernest, how are you today? How’s your day been?
EK: Hey Leigh- I've really had a Super busy day here in NYC- right from the moment I awoke- As we are right in the middle of doing all the Press ,Media & Promo(As I'm Doing right now-LOL!)-for my brand new Maxi-Single "WEN U DREEM" (that's from my up-coming new album I'm currently recording at the moment)- But something Wild just happened!- my new Label (I'm Now signed to FAMOUS/EMG/UNIVERSAL Records INC.)- worked really hard to get the record out at the very top of the year-And they did it!-(THEY ARE AWESOME!)- well low & behold- they even went as far to send out promo copies to prime reporting DJ's-2 weeks in advance... well it entered the World Dance chart at # 42- ...yes- but that's Not all...Noo...Then It shot up 20 points to # 21 ( My B-day was Feb 21st!)- Hit at once!...-YES!- but there's more.... Yes!-Now- yes -Now it just ...went "TOP TEN"!- I Swear!- "MAMMY"-to # 8- We are Thrilled!- what a way to begin a new album- YES!- ...So outside of that... I'm hanging out at home in my NYC Apt. doing the wash...Indeed.
GQ: Since we spoke to you last, what have you been up to?
EK: Well I also have been working with all the many different remixers directly on my up-coming new singles of this new album , as well as working on the actual album it self- wow -it's a lot of work!(But Really worth it in the end!) That can be said for a lot of things(Oh listen to me- I'm a caution!)
GQ: Your new single, Wen U Dreem, has been released and is doing quite well on the charts! What can you tell us about that?
EK: WEN U DREEM is really to me one of the most mystical, magical - not seen coming stories of my life!- a dreem project!-from day one!
I got up one bright morning- went to my computer and there was an email from a dear friend & co -writing partner Mauricette (Caruana) - well I opened it and it was a lovely letter to me saying she had written this song for her son- and she had thought about it and the only person she could recording it was me!
I was like- wow!
So I listened to the song- I instantly fell in Love with it- Wonderful lyric's, Great melody- So I said- Let me send it to Steve(My Co-producer Steve Skinner)- Well Steve Loved it and agreed to Produce it- well everything thing went like Magic clock work! An amazing vocal session (on the Hottest Day of the Year!- I may add!)-But we were very cool in the fabulous studio!- And Got it laid 1-2-3!- It was such a GREAT Session- Then-...
I did not hear from Steve for about a month (Did not even hear the song!-Drove me NUTS!!!)
Then one wonderful morning - I opened my email and it was there!
The Most Beautiful Song Ever!
Then it was my job... to cast all the remixers to make the full production of the Maxi-Single!
And I thought & thought- Well I felt it needed to continue with my progressive NRG/TRANCE UK sound- so thru Fabulous DJ David Strong in the UK- He got me to the guys at "Quantize" and they were on it!
Next I was listening to Sirius Satellite Radio And heard this Awesome DJ Mike Brodes- well I contacted him and he was on it- well of course Everyone's current fave Circuit DJ is DJ DREW so I got on with him & he was on it with Abe Clemments.
And from my last hit "SAY ADIEU returning were from the UK DJ Carnaby & Jones who turned in a amazing mix(I never heard a record that uses canaries as percussion - But this one does!
And of then the Fantastic Elliot S. with his Uplifting & Retro filled MIxes- What a line-up but the finale was the topper - the creator of DISCO himself the legendary TOM MOULTON to do a mix on it!- and Shot the cover with Jack Pedota & Suka -and the rest was done in post.
And that's the Story of "WEN U DREEM"- you never know what wonderful things you will awake too!
or I left out the "witch part" I was signed to my former label- They did not pay me or my producer or remixers for my last album or Single- so we got legally free!( I will Tell It LOUD!)
And then -Oh Joy Of Joy's- I got signed by FAMOUS/EMG/UNIVERSAL Records INC. straight away- AND I love them!- Yeay!
GQ: You are an artist who has been in the industry for quite a long time now, and you've written songs for other artists, and had your songs covered quite a lot. Which of those songs are you most proud of?
EK: Now you can't make me choose between my children - are you?- I will tell you-.. honestly- The songs that mean the most to me are the ones that make the most money!-JUST JOKING- But I will tell you a song of mine I wrote back in 1992 still brings me in checks today(They are small now- but still!)
No Really- My Favorite songs are of course the ones I'm currently doing-but I use my song like memories!- yes- _I use my songs like a memory of my life- so if I think of a song- it goes with a memory- a time a place- people- life- music- It's strange I know- on the new album we decided to do a REAL DISCO song but to make it really special we called it "Only Music Survives"- but it's true statement-after we are gone "Only Music Survives" - it was written by Elliot Sokolov AKA Elliot S. & Golden Globe Winner Lance Horne & Myself- It has a real 48 piece orchestra in it!- it's Awesome!(& were not Done!)- and this is just one of the many, many highlights off this new up-coming album we are doing!
I'm very Excited about my current record and my-up-coming singles and this amazing new album and how super my team really is as well as my label.- Keep Hitting Guys!- YOU ARE AWESOME!!!
GQ: Are there any plans on coming to Australia any time in the near future?
EK: I definitely want to --They are talking about it!- funny one of my agents last night said we should open the new tour overseas!
GQ: Do you have any messages for our readers?
EK: Yes- I want to say Thank You- Thank you for being - I love my GENQ audience- And Thank you for making this all possible for me!
