On Golden Pond (1981). Norman is a curmudgeon with an estranged relationship with his daughter Chelsea. At Golden Pond, he and his wife nevertheless agree to care for Billy, the son of Chelsea's new boyfriend, and a most unexpected relationship blooms.

This is a movie both defined and elevated by its cast - like, god, Henry and Jane Fonda and Katharine Hepburn - does it get any better than this in 1981? They all really deliver moving, rich performances too, and it's a shame that the writing doesn't quite rise to meet them. 7/10.

On Golden Pond premiered in Los Angeles, CA on 18 November 1981 before limited release in December and wide release in February 1982.

Ernest Thompson adapted his 1979 play for the screen after Jane Fonda had purchased the film rights, specifically for her 76-year-old father to star (in his final film role). 74-year-old Katharine Hepburn presented Fonda with Spencer Tracy’s “lucky hat,” which Fonda wore in the film.

On Golden Pond was a commercial and critical success; it was the 2nd-highest grossing film of the year (behind Raiders of the Lost Ark), and was nominated for 10 Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director (Mark Rydell), Best Supporting Actress, Best Cinematography (Billy Williams), Best Editing (Robert L. Wolfe), Best Original Score (Dave Grusin), and Best Sound (Richard Portman and David M. Ronne).

It received 3 Oscars: Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Adapted Screenplay.
