The crowd on the corner roared with laughter and applause, coins flashing in the dusk light as Ernesto twirled his cane like a maestro of mischief. You’d only meant to stop for a moment. But somehow you’d ended up on stage with him, holding his battered top hat while he worked the crowd with that quicksilver grin.
“Now, ladies and gents!” he cried, voice smooth as caramel. “My lovely assistant here will prove that miracles do exist. If only you pay enough to see them!”
The hat filled fast. When the police whistle blew, it filled faster.
Ernesto glanced at you, grin sharp. “Time to make our grand exit, dove.”
You didn’t ask how he planned it; you just ran.
Through alleys that smelled like rain and smoke, under laundry lines and over crates, the two of you darted like foxes. Ernesto laughed the whole way, cane clattering against the stones. “Nothing like applause followed by a good chase! Builds character!”
“You call that character building?” you panted.
He shot you a wink. “I call it cardio.”
By the time the shouts faded, you were both leaning against the wall of a half-crumbling building, catching your breath. Ernesto straightened his hat, still chuckling. “Well, my daring volunteer, you’ve got talent. Quick feet, quicker smile.”
You tried not to grin back. “You could’ve warned me about the illegal part of the performance.”
“Illegal’s such a dreary word,” he said. “I prefer profitable but misunderstood.”
He twirled his cane once more, then softened. “Come on. You look frozen. You’ve nowhere to go, do you? I’ve seen you plenty of times on these streets.”
You hesitated. “…Not really.”
Something flickered behind his eyes — sympathy, maybe. He tilted his head toward the narrow staircase beside you. “Then you’re in luck. My grand estate is open to guests tonight.”
His “grand estate” turned out to be a single, drafty room above a shuttered tailor shop. Gino was already asleep on the couch, a little pile of blankets rising and falling with his quiet snores.
Ernesto rubbed the back of his neck. “’Fraid there’s not much to offer. Couch’s taken, floor’s cold, and the bed’s… well.” He looked sheepish. “It’s a bit small for two.”
“That’s fine,” you said quickly. “I’ll take the floor.”
He frowned, tail flicking. “Not a chance. I might be a scoundrel, but I’m not heartless.”
He rummaged through a trunk and pulled out a thick wool blanket. “Here,” he said, laying it out on the bed. “We’ll share. Strictly for warmth, you understand. Efficiency.”
You arched a brow. “Efficiency, huh?”
“Entirely practical,” he insisted, though the tips of his ears twitched pink.
Under the blanket, the night was quiet. Too quiet for Ernesto’s usual patter. He’d changed out of his flamboyant coat and vest, the hat and gloves folded neatly on the little nightstand. In their place he wore a thin, worn tank top and pajama pants covered in mismatched patches. His arms were lean and freckled, the color of copper and candlelight, a few scars scattered here and there. He caught you looking and laughed softly.
“Not what you expected from a showman, eh?” he said, tugging at a loose thread near his knee. “Can’t exactly sleep in all that velvet. The coat’s for show — this is the real uniform.”
You smiled, eyes drifting to the fabric. The pajama pants were full of patchwork, some pieces newer than others, stitched carefully in crooked but sturdy seams. “You did all those yourself?”
“Mm.” He gave a little shrug, but his voice softened. “Gino finds the scraps. I do the sewing. He’s got an eye for colors, that one. You wouldn’t think someone quiet as him could argue, but he manages it well enough.”
You tilted your head. “Argue?”
“Oh, sure.” Ernesto’s smile grew fond. “He’ll scowl at me if I pick the wrong thread. Or shake his head until I change it. Doesn’t need words — that boy’s got opinions, believe me.”
He ran a thumb over one of the patches, the stitches catching faintly against the calluses on his hand. “These trousers’ve seen better days, but they’re strong now. I did the same to his jacket last week — elbows were torn clean through. Took me half the night to fix, but he beamed like I’d handed him gold.”
A soft chuckle slipped from him. “Guess that’s one thing I am good at: keeping things together. Clothes, plans… people.”
He looked down at his handiwork again, eyes thoughtful. “He’s a good one, that boy. Smart, quick..too quick, sometimes. I try to keep him out of the real mess of things, but you know how it is. This world doesn’t offer much mercy, especially for the likes of us.”
He leaned back on one elbow, gazing at the cracked ceiling. “When I found him, he was running the same streets I used to. Couldn’t let him rot there. So I taught him the trade, how to spot the honest from the truly dangerous. How to smile, even when your pockets are empty. He deserves better than all this.”
You turned a little toward him, the blanket shifting. “He’s lucky to have you.”
He rubbed a hand over his face, and for once the grin faded into something weary but real. “I try, dove. I’m not strong, not gifted, but I can keep the boy fed. That’s worth something.”
“You do more than that,” you said.
He looked at you then, orange eyes catching the candlelight. “You really think so?”
You nodded. “You keep him safe. You make him laugh. That’s a lot.”
For a heartbeat he didn’t move. Then a faint, crooked smile returned. “Careful, dove, you’re making me sound like a decent man.”
“Maybe you are,” you said, teasing gently.
He chuckled, but it came out a little shy. “Don’t spread that rumor around. I’ve got a reputation to protect.”
As you got under the blanket, you both tried to find a comfortable space. Him ever so careful to not overstep any boundaries. His arm brushed yours, warm and solid. And he froze, every bit of his charm slipping for a second.
“Sorry,” he murmured. “Didn’t mean to crowd you.”
“It’s fine,” you said softly.
He swallowed, then smiled without quite looking at you. “Good. Wouldn’t want to give you the wrong impression, you know.”
“Mm-hmm,” you hummed. “You’re doing great, maestro.”
That earned a quiet laugh, the kind that sounded almost like a sigh. “You really are trouble,” he said. “Sweet, but trouble all the same.”
“Then we match,” you whispered.
He went quiet again, tail flicking lazily beneath the blanket. “Yeah,” he said finally, voice barely above a murmur. “We do.”
And for the first time that day, Ernesto Foulworth didn’t talk himself out of the moment. He just stayed there beside you, eyes half-closed, listening to the steady rhythm of your breathing, his hand resting lightly over the edge of the shared blanket, close enough to feel the warmth, but careful not to take more than he was given.
Outside, the city muttered in its sleep, but inside the little room everything was still. Ernesto’s voice drifted once more, softer now, meant only for you.
“Sleep well, dove.”
