What did Kubrick do wrong if I might ask? Personally I love the visuals but think the rest of it sucks. Especially Jack. King had a troubled guy who went insane.Kubrick had him insane from the first moment you saw him. The only horror in the movie was how he treated the actors and especially poor Shelley Duvall!
Full disclosure: I’m not a Kubrick fan. I find him ultimately much more obsessed with the visual element rather than the storytelling or human one and I desperately wished the man had just become a photographer.
The Shining is, to me, King’s best novel, and the way it talks about the breakdown of the family and the fact that you can’t run from yourself and your own problems. No one can make you be good, not even in an environment hundreds of miles from anyone. Your miseries will find you if you refuse to deal with them. Jack, in the novel, is a man who is weak, and who fears his own weakness so much that he blames the world around him, but not a man who is evil, because evil is easy, though we could bicker between the two pretty easily, and it’s very very clear in the novel that there is, in fact, something wicked and evil in the Overlook, that a place can be born bad. There’s really none of that in the movie, and I don’t understand why he kills Dick Halloran nor why he refuses to destroy the Overlook the way the novel did. It allowed Jack to be a failure but to have something good come of the whole nonsense, and for the hotel to essentially eat itself.

AGREE on this and GOT ending. So much character development OUT THE WINDOW. Not only is it a terrible fucking message, but I feel like my time was wasted.
Yeah, it’s so frustrating, because if the end message is that we cannot change, and nothing we ever do will keep us from the path we’ve already been set upon, A: Why bother and B: you gotta front load that shit. Tell me in your narrative that everything is a circle. I get annoyed when a character works so hard to not be the worst of what they could be, and Dan spends like TEN YEARS trying, and they take pains to show him rejecting that fate over and over and then it’s like “Doesn’t matter, you’re gonna do the thing your father did regardless”

The self hate here is terrible and delicious. Haruka feeling like everyone hates her and having to be dragged away from immediate self destruction is so well written here.
Thank you! I write so much, anymore, of settled Haruka who admittedly stil has her problems but is much more reasonable and knows when she’s being really rough with herself even if it’s hard for her to get out of it. There’s some delight in going back to a Haruka who has essentially no self-awareness and is just a pit of self-hatred.

Part of the reason I'm speaking out is I am SPOILED as a writer on tumblr and I FEEL BAD SOMETIMES.
I cannot emphasize enough that the support DOES NOT HAVE TO BE OF ME. THAT IS NOT MY LARGER POINT. (will I take your love? yes, of course, i am greedy, but that's not my point) I want to see SOME WRITER supported.
