Repose en paix, Katia and Maurice Krafft.  Renowned throughout the volcanology world for their pioneering films (still and moving) of volcanoes erupting, the Kraffts (and 41 others) got caught in a pyroclastic flow on Mount Unzen (Japan) and perished on this date in 1991, Katia at the age of 49, Maurice at the age of 45.  Maurice, in an interview later shown in National Geographic’s film on their work, the very day before their deaths, said, “I am never afraid because I have seen so many eruptions in 23 years that even if I die tomorrow, I don't care.”  It is true, M. Krafft, there are worse ways to go than doing the thing one loves.
