The ground itself bleeding molten light.
This research, recently published in the journal Nature Geoscience, suggests that studying volcanic ash during eruptions could be used as a tool to forecast tremor intensity.
Continuing work by the research team, which now includes students from the Museum’s Master of Arts in Teaching Earth Science Residency Program, aims to better understand this mechanism at La Palma and worldwide. Read more about their findings in our blog post.
'It appears that these magma bodies exist beneath volcanoes over their whole lifetime, not just during an active state.'
Though immensely powerful, volcanoes are not always spewing hot lava around. Many are considered dormant or even extinct and have not shown their strength for hundreds of thousands of years in some cases. However, a team of scientists recently found magma chambers lurking beneath six volcanoes in the Cascade Range. The findings published January 23 in the journal Nature Geoscience are challenging the idea of what separates an active volcano from a dormant one.

“At one point, we paused to take in the site of the 2021 eruption: a cooled lava sheet extending nearly to the horizon. Far in the distance, well beyond the marked trail, a few hikers took wide, delicate steps across the jagged basalt. Old lava is brittle; it tends to form hollow tubes, the insides of which can remain somewhat molten for months. Absentmindedly, our guide told us about an acquaintance of hers, a geologist, who once stepped on a section of lava he thought entirely cooled, only for his legs to break through the crust into the hot bubble below. She even described the smell. Then we were off walking again, keeping strictly to the trail.”

2025: Mt Hoei is a flank volcano on the south-eastern side of Mt Fuji that last erupted in 1707, causing extensive damage. There are two craters left. There is a fab but strenuous loop walk up to the Hoeizan summit from the Fujinomiya 5th Station.

Man, I fucking love dykes. They're so hot. and powerful. the way they can break through such strong barriers and change the structure of the world itself is so amazing. And there's so many types, too- they could be dark, or light, or a whole mix of colors, and they come in all different shapes and sizes. There's really fresh and new ones, and there's anciently beautiful ones. And they can build themselves up so strong that generations later we can still see their effect on the world, even when they've long been cold and still. They're so beautiful and inspiring, too. And when I look at pictures of them, I just wish I could be there in person and witness the beauty firsthand. There aren't a lot of them where I live, so unfortunately I have to wait until I'm able to travel so I can go to find some. They've got to be one of my favorite parts of living in this world.
