Do you have any embarrassing holiday memories?

Erwin: I wouldn’t say it was any particular memory, but I happen to be the one that is guaranteed to slip on ice or snow. It makes it very difficult to participate in any outdoor activities.

[Hange: “By difficult, he means fun for us.”]

[Miche: “We all vote to go ice skating every year just to watch Erwin fall. Even Levi shows up.”]

Erwin: You fall just as often, Miche.

[Miche: “There’s just a certain... finesse when you do it dude.”]

What gifts do you like giving?

Erwin: I struggle with gift giving because I want to be sure I am giving what the person wants and not just something for them to pretend to be excited over.

[Miche: "No one is excited over your gifts, dude."]

Erwin: Exactly.

So I guess that answers what gifts you like giving, but what gifts do you usually give then?

Erwin: I--

[Miche: “Why don’t you let us tell you what he got us last year.”]

I suppose that works too.

[Hange: “A ladle.”]

[Levi: “An automatic soap dispenser.”]

[Miche: “A pocket watch. You got Hange a ladle??”]

[Levi: “I liked my gift.”]

Erwin: Thank you, Levi.

[Miche: “Didn’t you break it on purpose?”]

[Levi: “You broke it.”

[Miche: “Oh right.”]

Does your family use any special dishes for holiday celebrations?

Erwin: We do a lot of traditional German dishes. I really like anything with sausage or potatoes.

What is your favorite holiday dessert?

Erwin: I actually like a lot of different flavors. I’m particularly fond of anything chocolate.

[Miche: “We know.”]

Erwin: I also enjoy gingerbread, but I’d have to say Miche makes a delicious spicy chocolate bourbon bundt cake that I find myself anticipating each year.

If you could relive any holiday moment, what would it be?

Erwin: I don’t know if it counts because it’s not one particular memory, but I would love to make Christmas cookies with my Oma again.

Was that something you did every year?

Erwin: Just about. She always had such a strict schedule for which cookies needed to be made when and what plate they should be served on. I have a lot of wonderful memories of that time.

How old were you then?

Erwin: From the moment I could hold a spoon to about fourteen.

What's your favorite thing about the weather getting colder?

Erwin: I lean more towards preferring colder weather so I have a lot of things I enjoy.

You can name a few.

Erwin: Sweaters, warm baths, hot drinks, I really enjoy spiced wine, as well as cozy blankets. Reading indoors when it’s cold outside feels especially nice.

Hi Charlotte! So I closed the winter interviews so I could give myself time to do holiday drabbles, but for you, I'm definitely doing this one :) I also feel like I might need to do a holiday drabble for Erwin haha it wasn't my plan, but I'm going to work on it! <3

What is a strange holiday tradition your family has that others don’t usually do?

Erwin: It’s possible that others do this around the holidays as well, but my family and I will usually play a game of hockey on Christmas.

I thought you fall a lot when you’re on ice though.

Erwin: The reasoning escapes me as well. I can’t ice skate, but I can play hockey quite well.

[Hange: “I believe it’s his competitive spirit.”]

What gifts do you like receiving?

Erwin: I will admit, I am not very sentimental. I am very practical though, but I am also very particular. I like gifts that I use.

[Hange: “He is not lying.”]

Can you elaborate?

[Hange: “When he says he likes gifts he uses. He means, like currently using.”]

I’m not sure I understand.

[Miche: “Let me help. His gift wish list is like a grocery list. It’s the stuff he likes that he’s run out of.”]

Well that certainly explains his style of gift-giving.

What is your favorite activity in the snow?

Erwin: Nothing too dangerous. I used to really enjoy building a snowman. I will say, I’m fairly decent at snowball fights.

Winter Interviews

When do you like to set up the Christmas tree? Do you have any special traditions with it?

Erwin: Unfortunately many of the traditions that were created, were maintained by my mother and grandmother. My father and I will put up the tree on the first of December. The only tradition we really continued was lighting candles around the living room. My Oma always liked that.

That sounds really nice.

Erwin: Yes, well we used to light the candles on the tree, but one year it caught fire so now we stick with lighting them around the room.

When your family gathers for a holiday meal, how many generations are there?

Erwin: At the moment it’s just three. My grandfather, my father, and myself.

Quite a bit of men in your family.

Erwin: *laughs* We seem to drive all the women away.

I find that difficult to believe.

Erwin: I appreciate that.

What’s your favorite thing about the weather getting colder? You’ve answered this one previously.

Erwin: If I may, I’d like to answer it again.
