BYO Shotgun (Part 2) - Hide Your Hats; The Pirates are coming! Es Firo in Mallorca
BYO Shotgun (Part 2) – Hide Your Hats; The Pirates are coming! Es Firo in Mallorca
If there’s been a common theme thus far with the Spanish festivals of European Bazaar, it has been the definite need of earplugs.
In March, at Valencia’s Las Fallas, it was the likelihood of having your eardrums popped like bubblegum by your close proximity to any one of a million fireworks. At the Mallorcan festival of Es Firoit’s probably going to be because there is a man dressed as a pirate…

Es Firo Festival. Soller, Mallorca
Es Firo is a local festival that runs for five days and commemorates the battle between the Moors and the Christians. These photos were taken on the Saturday before the battle reenactment which is on a Monday. On this day, there is a parade in which the towns people are dressed in traditional costumes and carry a statue of the Virgin Mary through Soller. They go to the church to place offerings of flowers, oranges and lemons to the Virgin, that she may bless them when the Moors arrive at their shores.

"Every year, on the monday after the second sunday of May, Sóller celebrates the festival of the "Moors and Christians", also known as "Es Firo". This "fiesta" commemorates the historical events of 11th May 1561, when an armada of twenty-two Algerian galleons disembarked in Sóller."
