Bilbao—the de facto capital of the Basque region—is famous, in particular, for the Guggenheim Museum designed by Frank Gehry. In 1997, ahead of the official opening of the museum, José "Txema" Agirre—a policeman serving with the autonomous Basque police force, Ertzaintza—was shot dead by members of ETA, an armed Basque separatist group, while protecting the museum. This act of violence was followed by others in the city, including a small bomb, by means of which ETA intended to protest the inauguration of the museum by the Spanish King and Queen and to draw attention to the separatist cause.
