Hi, I'm studying the moon and it's phases and I came upon the names of the full moons. I am aware that these are of Native American origin and of their studies over centuries of the night sky. But do these names only apply to the northern hemisphere and it's seasons? or can you use them in the southern hemisphere too? Also, wouldn't it be culture appropriation to use these?

Honestly, few things irritate me more than people lumping ever single Native American nation into one, like, all encompassing spiritual tradition. Like, there are hundreds of nations recognized by the US government, not to mention all of North America or, you know, how many tribes were destroyed by Europeans. Hundreds of nations across a country with vastly different climates and terrains with different origin stories and mythologies. There is no way they all had the same moon names, you know? Like, exactly what Native American tradition does it come from? I don’t know and don’t really care to add it to a pile of things I don’t understand and was not directly taught about. Why not make your own? I don’t know? Watch the star placements, name the full moon of your birth month after you or after plant that bloom in that season. I’d totally call the August full moon the blackberry moon, but that’s just me.
