Mexican poppies (Eschscholtzia californica)

Eschscholtzia, aka california poppy. It's in the poppy family, but not the poppy genus. Sort of like celandine or bloodroot. It does contain some opioids, and can be used for pain, although its use as a sedative seems more popular. It will grow here in kentucky if you plant it, but out west there are fallow fields filled with it as a weed, in bloom right now. . . . I keep a stock bottle of the tincture of this plant in my apothecary, but it isn't one that i use very frequently, owing to the fact that it isn't prolific here and there are plants with somewhat similar properties that are. Still, it is a good strong medicine and is surprisingly uncomplicated for the level of strength that it has. . . . #eschscholtzia #papaveraceae #flowers #orange #herbalmedicine #medicinalplants #herbalist
