Escorihuela 1884, Organic Vineyard Malbec, 2018: A Must Try, Revelation Wine! To tell you the truth, when I hear the words: “organic, minimum intervention and wild native yeasts”, my skepticism always jumps into high gear. I knew however, that there was something special about this glass. I could immediately discern, by a swift peek at the color and a quick whiff, that the wine I was about to dive in had a beautiful story to be shared. (I feel I do need to point out that the knee-jerk bias to the “organic” labeling is not necessarily warranted, as so many of the best wines in the world are grown and made following biodynamic principles and minimum intervention practices. That however is a topic for another story). Made with organic grapes from a biodynamic harvested, single vineyard in the geologically unique vinicultural zone of El Cepillo, in San Carlos, Valle de Uco. Complex and fresh on the nose and palate; Cassis and plums. Forrest floors. Herbs. Balanced acidity. Soft tannins. Medium to full body in the palate. Long pleasant and delicate finish. Easy to drink, not in a simple, one-dimensional way, but satisfyingly thought provoking. The wine continued to develop in the glass, sharing stories of where it came from, and I, gladly, continued listening.... and, of course, tasting. The winery was established in 1884 with the advent of railroads in Mendoza. Founded by a Spanish-born winemaking pioneer in Argentina, Don Miguel Escorihuela Gascón, who with time and ingenuity, made the winery one of the most influential ones in Argentina. The wines from Escorihuela 1884 are now available in Florida through “Terroir Driven Wine Importer” United Cellars.
