Devon
I awoke in the hospital the next day with Devon glowering at me.
“What the hell were you thinking going against ghosts without any salt?” he berated, as soon as he saw my eyes open.
“I thought I could just banish them!” I said defensively.
He glowered. “Do not make me regret recommending you to the wanderers. You’ve got raw power, but you don’t have any sense. You need to learn to focus before you get dead.”
I’ve known Devon for most of my adult life. He was my neighbor, friend, occasional lover, and now mentor. I hated to embarrass him.
“You are lucky those teenagers called the cops. If they hadn’t arrived, the spirits would have sucked out your life essence. Someone with your power is a rare treat for the likes of them.”
As he spoke the air began to feel cold.
“Rare enough for them to follow me to the hospital?” I asked, my breath making plumes in the air.
Devon just simply threw me his spare bag of salt and waited for the spirits to coalesce.
Devon began throwing his salt at the spirits, destroying four of them before they had even fully manifested.
I tossed my salt at the final ghost, dissipating it, and sighed.
“Seems I still have a lot to learn,” I said.
