The Doomed Magicians: Khanef, the Alchemist Sphinx . "Every atom bends over to her will, and even gold turns to clay in her grasp" . For several years now, I have noticed that sphinxes are my favorite mythological creatures. I am fascinated by their morphology and the aesthetics each culture has bestowed upon them: from the classic Egyptian androsphinx (with a male face), linked to the protection of the pharaoh, to the Greek ginesphinx (with a female face), deeply connected to the concept of riddles and perhaps the most famous alongside its Egyptian counterpart. There were also similar creatures, not exactly sphinxes, but guardian hybrids fulfilling the same symbolic role: guarding the thresholds between the human and the divine, like the Assyrian Lamassu of Ancient Mesopotamia. . I designed this sphinx for my series The Doomed Magicians: she is Khanef, the Alchemist Sphinx, the first creator of the Athanor Kiln, an alchemical device capable of fusing hydrogen atoms with the power of the sun, transmuting them into the coveted element with atomic number 79: gold.
