Opening of the Javier Fernández Academy

November 20th, 2020

Javier Fernández's new project consists of several stages across Spain for young skaters to perfect their technique. So far, only Madrid's stage is confirmed (December 7th-8th), but their intentions are to replicate this in every region that has an ice rink and to do it biannually. There's also going to have a section for inclusive skating, working with a Down syndrome association.

New pair in the Spanish team

Laura Barquero has a new skating partner: the Italian Marco Zandron.

The Italian federation has already released him and the ISU has given them the clearance so they'll be able to compete together after February 2021.

Statements:

Laura Barquero: I'm very happy to create this partnership with the Italian skater Marco Zandron and I'm eager to compete alongside him as of February. Our current goal is to participate in every competition, we can and gain experience together. We're working very hard to show our programs as soon as possible an so that you can see us on the ice soon.

Marco Zandron: I'm very happy to skate with Laura [Barquero] and I'm very happy with the work we're doing as a team; I'm thrilled that I can compete representing Spain. We started skating together recently, so there's still a lot of work to do, but, we are very enthusiastic  about our debut in competition and we have high expectations for the future.

It has been announced that the ice dance pair Olivia Smart and Adrian Díaz will keep their last season's rhythm dance and will change their free dance, that will be skated for the first time in public at Skate Canada.

Which is your favourite element?

My favourite elements are the jumps, especially the double Axel, the triple Loop and the triple Lutz (the last one when it cooperates hehe).

Which is your favourite memory on the ice?

I have so many… Even if I have to choose only one, I’d choose the last 6 minutes of warm-up at 2014 Olympics. I was skating with the skaters I admire the most in the world: Mao Asada, Carolina Kostner, Ashley Wagner, Adelina Sotnikova and Yulia Lipnitskaya.

Who is your favourite skater or your role model?

My favourite skaters are EVERYBODY! Ladies, men, ice dance and pairs. Each one of them has that something that makes them unique and makes them different. Those details make them themselves.
